The wife is bugging me for a christmas list....so i need to come up with one.
So i'm wanting to get into casting my own blanks. I need to know what I need to get started in this. Do I need a pressure pot? I know I need resin...and molds...but thats about all I know.
If i could give her a list of items needed to get started...and maybe where she could find this stuff...that would be great

Thanks alot for all your help
Happy thanksgiving to everyone:)

I don't know nothing about casting. I do have some molds and resin and tried a few without a pressure pot, they turned out poorly. so I think you would need that. They all seem to be based on a paint sprayer pressure pot with a lot of customization to make it work. There is a lot of info in the forums somewhere on making them. I would check that out.

Here is a library article. http://content.penturners.org/articles/2010/startcastingforlessthan100.pdf

Do you need a pressure pot? Well the short answer is no just for blanks. I cast without my pot all the time.

If you want to cast objects, I would recommend one but not required to start unless you have the money.

You can do it cheaply if you want but just like everything else, you get what you pay for....:beat-up:

For casting Alumilite, you must have a pressure pot, an electric scale, lots of plastic cups and Popsicle sticks. For dye, use oil base paint and/or mica powders. Best place to buy most of the things you need is online too. Do lots of searching and price comparisons. You can use silicone molds from Gadget or make your own molds out of plastic cutting boards, just screw them together and tape the seams.

For casting PR, you don't always need a pressure pot. You don't need a scale. You do need the plastic cups and mixing sticks..but you need plastic cups that won't melt! There's other options for mixing in too..glass jars, silicone muffin tins, etc. You also can use oil paints and mica powders for PR. PR is definitely cheaper, but not necessarily better, and not always that much cheaper either depending on how much quantity you will invest in. Both products have pos/neg features that in my opinion make them equal over all. What you want to cast is the real question to ask, so that you know which product is better suited for you.

ie...just casting blanks..makes no difference.
casting wood, pine cones, things like that..alumilite.
casting tubes, like labels or skins, PR.

Where do i find PR at? is this something I have to order online?
What im thinking about....is gluing some "fiber" yarn etc. to the brass tubes...and casting them. does that sound like something a beginner could accomplish?

You could accomplish the yarn pen blank without casting at all! Just glue it to the tube, and saturate in CA glue. Keep building the CA up until you have the thickness you want...

But of course casting is WAYYYYYYYYY more fun that CA glue.

I never thought of that.....and would prefer the wife not find this info out!...lol
trying to ruin all my fun and mess!

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!
