Folks, I have a great story to tell ya.

Last November I posted here that we were expecting our first child. What I did not post here was that right at Thanksgiving, we miscarried at 7 weeks. That was a very hard time, and I know a LOT of you here have probably had the same tragedy.

However, I know the Lord is faithful, and right now we are 20 weeks into what looks to be a very healthy, very good pregnancy, and it's a BOY (well, 80% sure according to the doc) and if not, well, I'm happy anyhow and I'll raise her as the biggest redneck tomboy you ever seen:D. What is REALLY cool is that the due-date for our boy is not too far from the date that we miscarried last year: Someone is smiling at us!

I want to make our likely-son (Isaac Christopher will be his name) something, and the obvious answer is a PEN.

So, which pen do you suggest? I will pick a suitable material soon, perhaps some wood from something from my past or from our city where he will be born (we will eventually leave the area when I graduate seminary).

I just can't pick a pen. Schnazzy like an Emperor, rugged like a big Sketch pencil, elegant like a Churchill, I dunno......

Congrats. on the pregnancy. I have found after raising, two boys, that it will not matter what stype of pen or what it is made from as long as it comes from you as a loving parent it will be treasured.

Congratulations, Matt! We lost two and the first was quite difficult, but we hald to our faith. As for what to make, yes, a pen would be okay, but you'll have to set it aside for awhile. If you want to make the child something, why not turn a rattle? I've seen simple plans on the internet.

I thought about a rattle, and I may yet do that. What I'm talking about is making an heirloom type item.

Although picturing a baby playing with a fountain pen--- ink all over the face, sounds like a good laugh (I wouldn't actually do that! It just sounds like fun)

A pen is a nice gesture for somthing to hand down at a latter time. But you could make a rattle for the present time. As far as the pen, it depends on when you want to give it to him. After Grade school, a slim or streamiline. After High School, one of the Jr. pens from Craft Supplies. As a wedding gift or College Grad., Emporer or a Lotus.

go with the rattle for now, make your wife a pen with his name and birthdate engraved in it! Personally, I think a Jr. Gent would be appropriate...think about it;)! The graduation gift makes sense also.

plus, there's no reason a rattle can't be an heirloom!

Congrats!

You might wait until he outgrows his first outfit, which is way to fast, and use the material to make him a heirloom pen. I did this with some of my daughters outfits for our parents, and it was a bigger hit than you can imagine. I don't have any pics of the outfits, but this is a denium slimline made using the same process. Just an idea. God bless you and your growing family.

Thanks guys, y'all are great! Fantastic suggestions, ESPECIALLY that last one--- I had not thought of making one from their clothes.

I think I'll make one pen out of a soiled diaper and give it to him when he's a rebellious, arrogant teenager to remind him of just what we did for him[}:)] not to mention his mother's labor!

Congratulations! There is nothing like being a parent. I don't have any ideas for except keep him supplied with tops, yoyos, bats.....Jim's pen made out of fabric got me to thinking. When he is born, ink his little toes, stamp them on a white pen and seal it. I would bet Mom and Grandparents would like it.

Keep'em coming guys. I think I'll print this thread out later on and show it to my wife, see what SWMBO has to say!

Thanks for the advice-- I'm convinced that pen makers rank in the top 10 most creative demographics on the planet--- second ONLY to politicians for the ways they dream up to dodge the issues people want ANSWERED AND FIXED.

I have been blessed with 3 beautiful granddaughters a red head,a brunette, and a blonde. What I did was let each pick their favorite wood and made them the credit card (small pen) pen from PSI. They were really taken with them. They still tell folk about them. BTW Number four granddaughter was due last Sunday ( alittle late ).lol Congrats, ain`t God neat!

If you do any casting, why not take one of the small baby pictures, wrap around the tube and cast it clear? You could also do his armband for the other half of a two piece like the Jr. Statesman. In fact you could make three of these. One for the son, one for the Mom and one for the deservedly proud Dad. I would still go with a rattle for now, and save the pen for later!

Oh I got it,cut down one of the trees in the hospital parking lot and then turn him a pen out of it.Then you would have a great story about how you got arrested and fined just to make him a pen.:DCongrats man,get plenty of sleep now, while you can.

At the place where I worked, a rattle would appear on someones desk. Invariably that person would become pregnant within a few months.

It became a running gag for several years.

Someone in another group once asked what SWMBO meant, and commented that the only thing they could come up with was "Selling Wife, Make Best Offer" !!!!!! :D
