I have been bestowed the privlage of organzing the "Penturners" night at next years Desert Woodturning Roundup. The Arizona Symposium sponsored by the Arizona Woodturners Associattion Feb 6,7,8 2009
http://www.desertwoodturningroundup.com/

I would like to have 3-4 short demo's that night to go with whatever extraviganzas we have planned, such as
Show off your pens.
Tip, Tricks & Jigs,
Door prizes,
Dancing ladies  and so on

Please give me your input as a newbie to a veteran as to what you would like to see demonstrated if you were going to attend such an event?

As always, your input is greatly appreciated.

Also, if you are in the area Friday evening Feb 6th from 6-9:30 PM, plan to stop in. You will not need to be registered for the symposium to attend the Penturners event. :)

Rumors......

Rumor has it......... Please, this is a rumor only.......

Isn't this how rumors start

There may be cameo apperances by....Virgil...Ed Davidson, Dare I say the Gisi boys :) BB, Oh MY! This could be a star studded line up

If I could make it, I would like to see a good demo on using a quality skew. Also a finishing technique. Maybe CA/BLO. I still have some problems with both.

Good start Stevers, I think knowing how to wheel your skew, can give you that perfect tolerence we all strive for and save you sanding time :)

I was thinking having 3 people demo at the same time all doing a CA finish.
I am sure you will see 3 completely different techniques and 3 perfect finishes.

I won't be there, but if I could I would love to see different techniques on doing threads for kitless pens.

I would like to recommend two demos that would be very helpful:

First would be a demo by the "home brew" crew. I would love to actually watch someone create and pour a PR batch, and have the individual give us a tour of the equipment, techniques and material used to create some of the beautiful blanks we see for sale!

Second would be a demo by the kitless gang. I would love to see how the kitless folks are advancing the techniques, and see what their process is for creating these stunning pens!

I would recommend getting Alan Lacer for your skew demo if you can.

I hope we will be able to see these on the IAP site, since some folks wont be able to attend.

Sharpening jig usage. I know I've got no clue how to use one, need to buy one. My turning is slowed down greatly by dull tools.

If I could go I would like all the above. I would also like to see more finishing techniques that others use such as laquer dipping, plexi, buffing etc etc etc. As many finishing techniques as possible.

Thanks for the input, if someone has already said "I want to see sharpening" and you wanted to see the same thing, please go ahead and make your post. If 20 folks want to see sharpening and another 20 want to see finishing techniques and only 1 person wants to see how to drill a hole, this really helps me plan on what demo's to line up.

I mean, now I know, I will demo on how to drill a hole

Thanks :)

Anthony! How cool!

I would love to see just about anything that Ed Davidson would demonstrate! He would be a good one to teach use of the skew.

Don Ward is another of my favorite demonstrators. His methods on doing a Pentel Pencil would be great!

If you could entice Russ to come down, anything he would be willing to demonstrate would be worthwhile. There have been some amazing things coming out of his shop lately.

Doing a panel presentation on CA finish might be very entertaining! I once attended a panel demonstration with the likes of Richard Raffin and Alan Batty talking about sharpening. It was truly one of the most informative discussions I have been to.

Bill Baumbeck could do a demonstration on kicking back and taking it easy! But he may have to practice a bit beforehand. (That was for you, Bill!) ;-)

You should have a great time! We'll all look forward to hearing what you put together!

Scott.

Well, the likelihood of me actually making it is slim, but I would like to see:

- Finishes in general - CA, lacquer, etc. Different methods other people use
- Casting techniques
- Sharpening would be nice

I'll be there, camera in hand, taking photos for the AWA & DWR webpages as I'm on the board for both.

I'd love to see you do a rope pen or 2 but I know that you're probably focusing the demos on techniques and tools that are available or likely already owned by the majority of attendees.

Having said that I'd settle for a recessed clip and/or closed ended styles as well as the CA finish demos that everyone else is requesting.

Jason

Wow, so much I'd like to see...

- Sharpening
- Finishing techniques
--- INCLUDING the sanding phase!
- Turning your own bushings
- A nice presentation on alternative materials would be fun!
- Not a "penmaking" topic per se but photography demo would be cool.

I'm not likley to make it to the show but these are some I'd enjoy.

Demos that I would love to see...

Anthony,
I am planning on attending since I am local. Let me know if you need help in prepping.

Here is what I would love to see...

-A kitless pen from start to finish using the tap and die (embedded clip)-Lets see if we can get Brian Gray to show this...he does an excellent job in creating crisp, solid looking kitless pens

-Advanced segmented pens-similar/close to Gisi design...will the Gisi's show this(i.e. focused on the glue up process due to time)-they do a great job on thier pens?

-Making kit parts from scratch...i.e. unique clips, center ring, nibholder etc. Gisi's, David Broadwell? or I have seen others that have done as well with sterling silver etc

-Tips for selling pens from people with alot of pens sold to date--I think thier is a guy who lives in Phoenix who is one of the top sellers in the country. I believe he does craft shows mainly.

-Lower priority-CA finish techniques that yield no visible scratch marks at all...

Nicholas Frederick

Wow, a lot of great ideas.
Cross segmenting, hidden clips. I was hesitant to suggest sharpening, so I'm glad some folks did.
Sounds like you've got your work cut out for you Anthony. Sure wish I could make it. I may see what I can do, have pretty good notice. I'd love to meet some more of you. Be fun to help out too. We'll see.
