Well, finally got through most of the pile of overgrown brush pile that had all these birch logs in it buried for a few years (most of the stuff around it was pretty much pure compost now) Origional thread

I hoped for some good birch blanks, but they all have these ugly black lines through them everywhere..

Most of these blocks are cut to about 16" long and this pile is about 1/2 of whats there. There is even some spalted maple I never got dug out yet but saw there still partially buried.

Heres what a few of the blanks from one block looks like.

Now.. these blanks feel pretty wet (they have been sitting under wet mulch for a few years). How long will they need to dry out before they are usable?

Jason,
What is that white stuff by your burls?
Please send some of the blanks down here and after careful study I will tell you how long it will take before they can be turned...don't send any white stuff though!

Jason, I'm sure the birch would dry much faster here in Warm Sunny Dry Tennessee than it will up there in the frozen tundra, we only had 31/2 inches of rain Friday, but is is nice and warm , close to 70 Fahrenheit, I'll be happy to send back any that doesn't rot away on my lathe, I mean front porch

Thanks for the offer guys lol :)

Jim. That was last fall when I had the burls dropped off to me when they were saved from a stove.

Soon as I get them all cut up, I will be sharing some. Way too many there for me to ever use myself.

Looks like it will be a chore to cut up in itself.. I have a 8" bandsaw that just wont do it.. Last night I cut one up by sawing it in 3" slices with the sawsall then using it on the BS.. Wish I could use my SCMS or TS, but I like my fingers too much..
