I had the opportunity this week to have 4 of my 5 grandsons over and make their 1st pen. They range in age from 8 to 13. The look on their faces when they got through with their pens was priceless. They all start back to school in about 2 weeks, each one said the same thing "I can't wait to show my buddies my pen, thanks Grandaddy". Sure does a grandad's heart good. :) :) :)

I'm not a granddad or a dad but reading your post sure made me smile  That's great you could spend some quality shop time with your grandchildren.

I know just how you feel, seeing the pride & accomplishment in the face & voice. It's great anytime you teach a person to turn a pen & see their pride, but those little ones seem to show it more. My Grandson & one of his buddies each turned one a couple of years ago [they're 12 yrs old now] & to listen to them on the "I did this' & 'mine has this grain', etc. The next morning here they come, gotta make another one. Those were for Moms. "we gotta make one for us." Well worth the couple of hours it took. Problem is, they grow up way too quick. Don't ya love em. Little squirts. Even their friends have always called us "Grandma & Grandpa."
DocStram, hang in there, the time will come quick enough. Then a lot of your 'shop time' will just have to wait.

Very nice. Can't wait to teach my grand-daughter how to turn. Her mum (my daughter-in-law) did some turning when she was younger. so..... right now she only wants to eat the tools..

I have my 7 year old Grandson here from Idaho. We are currently building a box, to his design, which changes hourly. We have gone fishing twice, will be making a pen this week probably a Sierra as it is one blank and straight. I will have him practice on a couple of my screwed up blanks first to get the hang of it. I have four Grandkids Justin(7) the oldest the twins Jakob and Madelynne (5) and the youngest Tori(4). LOML provides day care for Tori and she is a shop rat. When Jakob and Madelynne are here form Idaho they are in the shop constantly, Each one has a set of tools and box from Grizzly and one drawer in my work bench is for them to store theire stuff. When they are around I just turn off the circut breakers for the tools and let them create with the wood scrap. I sit out on the deck oustide the shop and read while they do what ever they do in there. I help when asked and show them how to do things but mainly get out of the way. When it is just Tori and I, she has one work bench and I have the other along with my Lathe so I can make pens while she does her thing. One thing I have learned kids now a days don't need all the electronic stuff they have. The can still have fun creating with wood scraps some nails, and latex paint and be happy for hours. Last year Justin wanted to build a robot so I ordered an fancy kit for $50 nope he made one out of wood and some wire and felt tip makers and is hanging on his bedroom wall. The kit is still in the drawer in the work bench. Here is a picture from last week with Justin and Tori

I read somewhere that your grandkids is your reward from God for not killing your kids. There is no doubt if I had known they were going to be this much fun I would have had them first. LOL!:):):)

I knew there had to be a reason I didn't flush my son, I mean besides not stopping up the toilet.
