I walked into Rockler today and some guy had a stack of beautiful cherry and Mahogany shorts. He and his wife were guarding the stack as they got ready to check out. This set me on high alert.

My friend who works there sensed what I was thinking and told me that there was more in the back. So I immediately headed back there. Here are two pallets full of shorts... one 3/4" stuff and one 1 5/8"-2" thick pieces... 8/4 and even larger. They were about 2 feet long... some a little shorter... and most between 5" and 8" wide. PRIMO Mahogany (Swietenia macrophylla)... FAS grade but shorts.

I asked how much they were and the answer shocked the daylights out of me... $1 BF. Woodworker's Source is selling 8/4 at $16 BF!! West Penn $15.50 BF. I knew exactly what to do. I said I want ALL of it. I don't care about the cherry... I want all the Mahogany.

So I got the Dodge RAM to the back door and they loaded it... 111 pieces of genuine Mahogany for less than $90. The boss tossed in a big 8"x8"x4" figured box elder bowl blank for nothing. I also grabbed a very nice thick curly maple bowl blank... grade AA. So here are the PIX. Enjoy!!

Nice Score! Will be seeing some posts selling blanks in the near future?

If I milled these into blanks there would be thousands of them!! And you guys don't like plain timber and this is plain old beautiful Mahogany. I doubt they would move here. I think it's going to bowls, plates, and boxes.

I have to turn at the county fair in August for Make a Wish so I will have lots of Mahogany to make stuff to sell to the people to give $$$ to the kids.

I have some hunduras Mahagony, but I 'll be glad to have youshae your Box elder with me though, just a balnk or two. Then again, it all depends on if you can part with them?

Box elder is wet. I coated the ends with anchorseal as well as some voids. That one will probably be made into a nice bowl!!

Very nice. Heck our local Rocker hardly even sells wood anymore. For the most part it's not even worth taking the drive to the store .. nothing like it used to be.

Bree, a RECENT development here is that people PREFER plain ole wood(many do specify LOCAL AREA wood) instead of exotic wood from other countries. We have seen a real boom in local pecan (just regular, not burl or spalted), apple and cherry.

While your nice score is not EXACTLY local, you may be surprised how well items made from AMERICAN wood may sell. In the recent months I have witnessed a massive "return to patriotism" here. I hope that as nation as our country really is embracing "Made in U.S.A with AMERICAN materials". Now more than ever, Americans must pull together.

Good grief! The blank they threw in is probably worth at least a third of what you gave for the whole lot. Congrats on another great score.

Great buy!
I lucked out one day at woodcraft with walnut shorts. They had them there for awhile and wanted to get rid of them so I got them for $1.00 for each board. Many were 2 feet! AC

Good hual.I've hooked up with a high end door manufactureer. They give me a call and asked if I wanted any mahogany,DA,I got4 pallets for FREE.And still go by and dumpster dive from time to time.

I guess now that I have a ton of mahogany I ought to make something out of it huh!

UR sooo funny!! I spent the after noon sorting and stacking the pieces which caused a comple reorganization of my shop storage areas. Just finished and I'm gonna get some Vietnamese food!

I may try to score a pen when I'm done eating unless Ice Road Truckers or one of my other shows has a new episode. I have to see what Lisa is up to!!

Very Nice! I wish I had any kind of woodworking store around me. My local Prairie Mill Works Wood working shop closed up last fall. Been lost ever since. lol

That's one heck of a score. Love the flaming box elder as well! the only thing I get for that price from WC is conversation.
