I recently signed up with a website host and now realize I know less than nothing with creating websites. The host sent me some web design software, but I can even figure out how to use it effectively or get it to save/upload to the site. I also really wasn't interested in learning how to build a site from scratch, maintaining it is one thing but building it is another. Any help would be appreciated as I am totally lost and really don't have the time to learn how to create a site.

Hooo boy, lessee no time want web site? nope can't see it. actually there are some template type things out there that can help. I don't know of any specific ones as I do write mine from scratch. I know others can point you in the direction of some. But generally I would recommend going with one to minimize the time it actually takes.
for a quick way to write them from scratch. I used Web sites for dummies and jsut followed it page by page, but even this takes a lot more than just a little time to do.

By the way, there is a difference in writing the site and uploading it. sort of like the difference between taking a picture and posting it.
you have a program that writes the page (html writer) and then you have the program that will upload it (FTP program) I use FileZilla as my FTP (File Transfer Protocol). setting up the FTP can be a little tricky but your Host should provide you with all the info you need. A lot of that info will make no since until you try to actually get the site completely up and running.

Dale,
I did the same thing and still don't have the site up and running. Not the sites fault, nor mine, I'm just a little (did he say a little) dense when it comes to these 'puter machines.
Hope Santa will bring me a book for dummies.
Good luck,
Vern

Hi Dale,

What does your host run for a control panel? It may have some software already installed there that would allow you to create a phpnuke, blog, etc that you can always get free templates to modify the look of.

If you have any questions, just drop me a message. I have been running a hosting business since 2000.

I run cPanel with Fantasico Pro. So there is lots of software with one click install. PHPNuke can be a bit overwhelming even for a seasoned web guy. Shoot, even the site designer included with Fantasico can be overwhelming. Maybe someone here can suggest a good template based site designer that is free.

If you are interested in getting a website started and you don't have much experience or would like a site that is very easy to modify and keep updated, I know a young guy who is starting business.

He did a website for my youth group at our fire department and it was great. He is very good to deal with and very reasonable in pricing.

He specializes in a a type of website called a CMS, which stands for "content management system". Simply put, you and he created the format of the site, and then the content can easily be changed (by you) without having to mess up the design (layout) of the site. The software to do this will already be available to you as he creates the site.

He will customize it to your needs. I get nothing out of this and only offer this up because he does very good work and is quite reasonable, and I hope it helps people on this forum. The site is easy to manage also even if you don't have any web design experience.

The site is: www.j-jgrafiks.com

Contact Jeremy and tell him Dan from Avon sent you.

If you want more info, PM me and we can discuss it and I can show you my site.

Inside Cpanel, the web editor works fine for a simple wysiwyg editor.. Or I would recommend something like zencart if you want to sell your pens online.. Or something like a blog if you want to tell what you have been up too or just created.. etc..

Thank you for your responses. My problem now seems to be getting my site to appear as a graphic vs a folder on the computer that you have to click to open. The webhost recommended using "Kompozer" to design my page. I made a simple test page of a picture of one of my pens and the name of the site. When I go to the site instead of seeing the page I see a two line entry that looks like something from the days of "DOS". When I click on the second line it opens up to the page I designed. I have sent an email to the host.

To see what I'm talking about here is the site I'm trying to create: www.pensofalifetime.com

That's interesting, now it has three lines with the second one being just the picture and the third one the page.

Hi,

You need a main file.. One needs to be named index.htm or index.html to get rid of the directory listings.

http://www.pensofalifetime.com/cpanel is the path for your cpanel control panel. You DO have a script in there as well that will allow you to edit on the fly or to create pages..

Inside Cpanel - go to file manager.. then click on the file you want to edit.. then click HTML MANAGER.. this will bring you up a wysiwyg editor (what you see is what you get)

Edit your page to your liking, then save :)

Jason:

Thank you! That did it, I finally got images to appear on my site. Now I feel like i'm accomplishing something and can work on a more elaborate site without feeling like I'm spinning my wheels. I'll probably have more questions later like how to get multiple pages but this is enough to work with for now.

Again thanks to all.
