So I just got my first order of burl today, 12lbs Red Morrel and 3 Amboyna, and I was super stoked. Then I got home and browsing the forums I read Nolans post about the DIW burl, and now I'm jealous again! Anyways, I'll just try to enjoy my little winky burls. I hope to get about 50 pens out of the RM, and 20 out of the Amboyna.

Anyone have any useful tips for someone cutting up burl for the first time? Also I haven't turned much either, so any help there would be appreciated. Thanks!

I got them from WestPennHardwoods, it was kindof a pain dealing with them. The lady I corresponded with was nice and all, but it did take over a month and half a dozen emails. I also ended up buying a lot more than I wanted because shipping is outrageous unless you buy over 100$worth, in which case it's free. Being somewhat broke I wanted to keep it as low as possible while over 100$, and I ended up spending 135. I'll try Nolan next time.

Shoot, I just looked at Nolans thread in Vendors, and realized that his bulk per pound rate is WAY cheaper. I paid $20/lb for the Amboyna, and it's admittedly not the nicest peice I've seen. Really kickin myself in the head now.:(:(:(

Another lesson learned: use IAP vendors!

Ohhh[:0] Burn! (as in nice insult, not in my pants[:p])

Funny that you mention it though, I do have a serious Poison Oak rash at the moment. *scratchscratchscratch*:(

I was using the term "winky" as a term to describe my burl, as being small, pathetic and humorously inferior in comparison, perhaps I'm the only one who uses it that way.[:p]

But is there anything I need to know about how to cut up my burl? I was just gonna put it on the bandsaw and have at it.
