WAY off topic, but really worth doing

OK, I have just got to ask.......

Why is it so shocking that a middle aged, slightly overweight, slightly homely woman has a nice singing voice?

I read about this in another thread yesterday and watched the video then heard about it on whatever show my wife was watching on TV last nightt as well.

Have we become so accustomed to the 18 year old bimbos strutting about the stage wearing close to nothing acting like they are singing that we have forgotten what real talent is? Heck, my great grand mother had a fantastic voice when she was in her 70's and no one was shocked.

I just don't get what all the fuss is about, what am I missing?

I kinda think it was her funny attitude and the sound of her voice when she talked that stunned me when she started singing.

Maybe "shocked" was the wrong word -- "wowed" is probably closer. I'm not trying to make any enemies here -- I was just as shocked/wowed when Paul Potts sang Nessun Dorma. No remastering, no electronic manipulation -- just that someone who has been selling cell phones or doing charity work musters up the gumption to get on a stage with a bunch of pre-teens and blows everyone away with what's in their body, not what's been remastered to be palatable.

BTW, if you haven't heard her sing "Cry Me A River, click on the link:

It's been along time since I've heard that much power and control in a voice, the timbre of her voice reminds me of Mahalia Jackson ( no relation to Michael ) I hope! voices like that are pretty rare, I hope the lady goes all the way and wins, and I don't think she looks any worse than Janice Joplin. WOW could they make a duet.

But I'd rather listen to her than look at her. With a serious makeover maybe she could make a good living at singing.
To tell the truth, I thought worse than that... When I first saw the clip I had the sound off and looked up to see her, and then Simon Cowel. So I thought OK, this has something to do with American Idol, and he is rippin' on some guy in drag.

You tell me you knew that voice was capable of singing like that, then I have a bridge to sell you. It was the whole package and then you got that song. Perfect combination.
