I wanted a larger than 3oz cup to mix up some resin for a couple different pours. We picked up the 5oz Dixie cups and then realized that they were waxed. Can I use a waxed cup or am I just headed for trouble?

never tried them myself, but i wouldn't waste your time or your resin, just find some clear plastic cups that have the recycle code on the bottom of the cup (#1 or #2, or #5) and you should be ok with those.

I would not use them. Get plastic drink cups with a recycle code of 5 or 1. I use ones with a recycle code of 5.

I got mine at a Liquor store. They are 3 oz Jagermeister cups. Got 100 for $5.00. May want to try that?

All I've ever used are the Dixie cups for casting. Hell of a lot cheaper than the clear plastic. The only caution I would have is with clear casting if any of the wax did get scraped off. Other than that I never worry about it and I cast ALOT!

I only clear cast things glued to tubes and wax in the mix is just another variable to handle. I choose to eliminate that variable. If Jonathan and Eric say they are OK to use then that works for me. But, I will stick with clear plastic recycle #5. But, I have a very inexpensive source.

In the 70's and 80's in all the casting text books, and general hobbyist type books the standard disclaimer was Do not use waxed cups as some can react with some resins, and can cause problems as been stated in a couple of previous posts. Also as been stated why add another controllable variable in the casting process.

But Jonathon, unless you changed your cups the 3oz cups are non-waxed. They work great but the 5oz are waxed and that can create problems if you are clear casting.

Not a problem with colors......

Brooks that's why your castings have the fantastic look they have. Its the wax mixed in!

I use clear 9oz cups from Sams. 200 for about $8. Maybe that's more than dixie cups, I've never looked. They are recycle code 1.

+1 ^. I learned the "fun" way that 120* resin and Dixie don't mix!

I used dixie cups, plastic shot cups, but the best one that I have found that can be used over and over again are small silicone measuring bowls. they usually come three sizes to a pack. I use acetone to clean them up after use.

I have used waxed cups from Kroger for over two years with no problems. Never had was come off into the casing of the PR. When clear casting I only use resin saver molds so the was would not be a problem. The waxed cups are certainly less expensive.
