Wave Bowl - Turned from Ambrosia Maple, then a repeating wave pattern was drawn and the region between the waves and the rim free form pierced. Airbrushed the water a dark blue-green. Finished with polyurethane. Around 8" (20 cm) in diameter.

Rose Plate - Turned from Maple, then a Rose image was textured and painted. Airbrushed a red sunburst around the rim. Finished with polyurethane. Around 8" (20 cm) diameter.

Thanks all!

John - The piercing on the bowl was an hour or two a day for a week to complete. It was a twice turned bowl rough turned in early 2010, returned six months later, then pierced in December. I don't really remember how much time I spent on the turning, but am guessing a few hours, it was one of my early attempts at turning thin enough to pierce, so returning was longer then normal for me.

Love the pierced bowl!!
That is excellent workmanship!

Andrew

Eric those are incredible. I like the bowl the best. Fantastic job! Russell

Thanks, the Wave Bowl is one of my favorite creations. It is also my first what I consider complete, non-trivial piercing of a turning. I've pierced some real small pieces, lots of eggs, and some partial piercings. I am so pleased with the result, that I will do more of this. I have to make some more thin walled turnings now so I have something to pierce!

I am torn on what I will do with the Wave Bowl, normally I like to keep my first transitional pieces. I still have a few of my first bowls and my first pens. On the other hand, I think this would make a great addition to a charity auction held every summer in LA. The Hollywood types show up and drop a lot of money for charity and have fun outbidding each other. I think the Wave Bowl would do well in that venue and generate a lot of money to buy wheelchairs for folks in developing countries. I guess there is no rush as the auction in in August which gives me time to get over my attachment to it.

Beautiful bowl. The piercing is very nice. I like the idea about donating it to raise money for wheelchairs. The plate is very nice also, but the flow of the waves grab my attention.

That's extremely cool and I could envision that bowl going for $400 easily in the right setting, maybe even more. They're both excellent pieces, but the bowl is unreal. Maybe next time don't post something in the same post as a pierced bowl. I really like the plate, too.

Spent the day at the Woodworking Show in the Big E (West Springfield MA) demonstrating the piercing techniques I used to make the Wave Bowl on my next pierced effort, the RCAF Roundel Bowl. Taught people the airbrushing and finishing techniques used for this and the Rose Plate. Will be back in the Young building Sunday either in the Central New England Woodturners Booth or in the Craft Supply USA booth.

Several IAP members stopped by to say hi and check out the bowl and plate in person.

Great job on the 'wave'. The rose plate is nicely done, but it's not really my cup of tea. Great finish on both pieces.
