With all the new activity going on in my shop.(Two of my kids are using it also) I have decided that it is finally time to add a new lathe. I am set for now on getting the Harbor Freight 34706 lathe that is reviewed here. http://www.penturners.org/forum/showthread.php?t=42750

I would much rather pay the $160 or so that it gets down to when on sale and having a 20% discount. Not sure why I want to complicate it it is just the way I am. I seem to jsut be more comfortable while working at the lathe knowing my back pocket is still about $100 heavier. It helps keep me balanced I think.

Anyway where I need help is both catching it on sale and finding a 20% off coupon at the same time.

I would appreciate any of you dropping me a note if you come across either.

By the way i am not beyond changing my mind for a comparabley good deal but I do not want to have another lathe that I have to fight with so quality above savings for me and this lathe has hands on recommendations.
Thanks.

Daniel,
The 20% coupon has been in several magazines such as Wood. I would be glad to scan one for you if you can't find any.

If you were making a trip to KS, I could make you one heck of a deal on a nearly new 34706 that does all of the above without issues. I do not need 3 lathes!

That lathe is onsale now. At lease it was $229 at the store yesterday.

I think you would like it.

Daniel i got that unit and use it all the time. Some people have had problems but i havn't. Just make sure after using it that you take it to the lowest speed before turning it off.

Jim, Thanks for the reminder. I do recall hearing that several times in regard to this "Style" Lathe. Of cours most of those comments where in regard to the Jet version.
Chuckie, I just got back from my local HF and they have it priced at $229 as well. I am not sure they get as low as the $199 mentioned in the review. Would be nice but it will not make or break the idea of me getting one. My wife thought she was not going to be able to get me to leave after I saw the lathe though. I have been fighting with a Post Tool (pre Harbor freight tool store) Pipe bed lathe for many years. it iwll be nice to have a lathe with actual ways and a solid tail stock. I can't even drill with my lathe. No handle on the tail stock quill. I knew nothing about lathes when I bought it. I can pick it up by myself and back then I thought that was a good thing. Thanks for the coupon I just printed it.

John, oh how I wish I could get to Kansas for a vacation. But I don't see it in the near future. Thanks though.

The fine print didn't bother the folks at Harbor Freight. I know from past experiences that our local one is on the lenient side though.
I went and got the lathe for $197 with the sale price and coupon.
we now have it set up in the shop and it is all ready to turn pendants excet for the head stock. I have one idea for now how to get the backer plate mounted but it is a real micky mouse way to do it.
what I need is an adapter that goes from it looks like to me is hte 1 inch 8 T.P.I spindle thread to a 1inch 16 T.P.I. (I need to verify both of those.
I did read that Jet makes adapters does anyone have a link to those? I know this will sound strange but I am not at all familiar with Jet lathes or there web site. I know I loose at least 5 penturner points for that alone.

hey Dan, the usual threading is 3/4x16 you can get an adaptor from PSI to go up to 1x8..( if you have the measurements right) the PSI adaptor is rather a bear as it has no flats, but one from CSUSA is 60.00 and run fairly tru...here you get what you pay for...

Daniel
The psi adaptor work's well.Cut you a washer to put between the adaptor and head stock use a big pair of channel lock's to tighten and remove.

Thanks everyone. I got the new lathe set up last night. I got my mind wrapped around the whole thing and decided that all I really need is the 3/4 X 16 tpi Female to1 X 8 tpi Male Adaptor. one little part preventing me from mounting every accessory I have to this lathe, We did get it set up whic only took about an hour. I wish you all could have seen my kids. you would have thought I brought home a new puppy. They had no idea I was going to get it. I had talked about it with my daughter and told her why I wanted it. She was able to turn it on, adjust the banjo and tails stock. her official appraisal is the the lathe is "Mega Awesome" or something like that. She then came in and googled the Jet lathe. When she saw the $750 price tag her jaw dropped. She knows this is a knock off and not reallythe same quality but still she said somthing like. Jeez why does Harbor Freight bother charging anything for them if they sell them that cheap. She has to work at least a few hours today so I want to come up with some way to turn pendants on this lathe this morning. I have a #2 MT Taper from Berea that is meant to hold there B Mandrel. I am trying to turn down the shank of a 3/8 inch bolt to fit this taper. messed up the first try so will start over this morning. My son is hte one that helped get the new lathe together and he is about as excited about it as my daughter is. He has spent more time in the shop than she has so I think he just sees anouther piece of equipment to maintaine :)
Anyway I am going to post in trades and give aways for an adaptor before i run off and buy one.
