I have that VS motor kit on my delta midi and I enjoy it....realize though it has 3 different pulleys on it....so if you want to use the full spectrum of speeds, there will still be belt changing. I was a little discouraged to see that when I go it, but I found that by using just the smallest pulley that it was slow enough for sanding and fast enough for aggresive turning and polishing. I keep it on the smallest pulley and don't change belts ever.

The question that come to my mind is: Why?
Changing speeds with belts is not exactly medival torture. For a pen project, you would probably only make one change.
And, the vs kit you are talking about spending over $100.00 for still only goes down to 650 rpm.
What will you have gained except feeding the lazy factor?
I agree, an electronic variable speed is nice but certainly not a necessity. You have a perfectly fine lathe now. Why screw around with it?
Personally, I would wait, save my money and sometime down the road upgrade the entire machine.

I hear where you're coming from, and it only takes a few seconds to change a belt, but for me when I do large corporate orders it helps quite a bit. Only a few seconds add up to hours when you're working on 100 pens at a pop. It's not laziness....it's efficiency. One could say we're all lazy by using motorized lathes instead of foot-powered ones! Granted, the VS motor wasn't quite as versatile as I'd thought, and unless you're doing large volumes at a time, I would have to agree that waiting and upgrading the whole machine might be the best route. If I ever win the lottery I'll pick up one of those Oneway 1224's.....of course I don't play the lottery so that makes it tough!

I have a vs mini jet lathe and really love it. It still has three speed settings with pulley wheels. Slow, Medium and Fast. I turn almost everything on the fast setting but when I drill (i drill on the lathe) I still have to change the belt to the slowest speed pulleys. It is the only lathe I have ever had so I'm not sure how often I would have to change belt postions on a non vs lathe.
