Got the message below from a government contact . I assume they know what they are talking about . Wayne

`Hi All,

I checked with Norton Anti-Virus, and they are gearing up for this
virus!

I checked Snopes, and it is for real. Get this E-mail message sent
around to your contacts ASAP.

PLEASE FORWARD THIS WARNING AMONG FRIENDS, FAMILY AND CONTACTS!

You should be alert during the next few days. Do not open any message
with an attachment entitled 'POSTCARD FROM HALLMARK,'regardless of
who sent it to you. It is a virus which opens A POSTCARD IMAGE, which
'burns' the whole hard disc C of your computer.

This virus will be received from someone who has your e-mail address in
his/her contact list. This is the reason why you need to send this
e-mail to all your contacts. It is better to receive this message 25
times than to receive the virus and open it.

If you receive a mail called' POSTCARD,' ev en though sent to you by a
friend, do not open it! Shut down your computer immediately. This is
the worst virus announced by CNN.

It has been classified by Microsoft as the most destructive virus
ever. This virus was discovered by McAfee yesterday, and there is no
repair yet for this kind of virus. This virus simpl y destroys the Zero
Sector of the Hard Disc, where the vital information is kept.

COPY THIS E-MAIL, AND SEND IT TO YOUR FRIENDS.
REMEMBER: IF YOU SEND IT TO THEM, YOU WILL BENEFIT ALL

Wayne,

You should always check Snopes.com yourself anytime you get something that tells you to forward to all of your friends. There is a real virus that comes in looking like a postcard or hallmark card but according to snopes, it is not the worst virus ever and will not burn your hard drive. Here is the link to the snopes.com write up on it: http://www.snopes.com/computer/virus/postcard.asp

Wayne,

Curtis' answer is not meant to put you down at all. It is a very common trick among people who originate this kind of spam email to boldly state that their spam was checked by Snopes. Usually, you will find that, as in this case, that their claim only has a small touch of truth.

I second what Curtis said. Although people mean well when they forward emails like this, if you take the time to check out the accuracy of the claim. you are helping to reduce spam emails.

I love when "experts" send that stuff around. Actually I don't. It makes the rest of us in IT look bad.

The email *IS* the virus.

Ahh yes id 10 t errors.... Just like PEBKAC...

Actually looking back at the original post I guess this is the funniest part:
Got the message below from a government contact . I assume they know what they are talking about .

Sure... probably not the best thing to assume ;)

Hey...I resemble that remark!

Wayne, As Cav said, I certainly did not intend for this to sound like I was putting you down. I hope it did not come across that way to you. If so, I apologize.

I must be out of my friggin' mind opening a thread entitled "virus".

Ok.. Now THAT was funny.. This thread gets funnier all the time.

And just to be clear - to jleiwig and everyone else.. my last comment was meant to be a joke (maybe not a good one)... maybe government workers wouldn't get such a bad rap if it weren't for all the politicians :eek: (more bad humor)

Curtis No apology necessary . Snopes was entirely new to me .

Alphageek The `assume they know what they are talking about ` comment
was intended was intended the way you took it , even though I
believed the warning to be genuine . And it kept coming out the
same way , regardless of whether I was wearing my engineer`s
hat , my farmer`s hat or my politician`s hat . Have to go now
to look for another virus for someone to open .

Wayne

Oh believe me...I know. Any sentence with government and implied knowledge in it is humorous. Trust me..I deal with these brainiacs on a daily basis!

Even though I was for several years assigned to a branch of the US Army Intelligence Corp., I still find it humorous to read the phrase "military intelligence" in some of my paperwork.

And to believe for a mear fleeting nanosecond that there is anything intelligent about washed-up-in-ton these days is indeed humorous. Just how would one measure "a mear fleeting nanosecond", what would be your measurment, or best guess?

OK, moderators, I know this is getting on the thin edge of the non-political postings razorblade, so I will quit and move on to better topics.
