Just posting to hope that if anyone here has family or friends there, I hope they are ok. Our thoughts and prayers go out to everyone involved.

A really sad and shocking day.

May the Lord God help everyone affected...to accept and "heal" as soon as possible.

Dario

I'm a VT alum ('89) and currently work at the VT corporate research center about a mile from the shootings. Most of us here are VT grads. Needless to say, we're all in shock. Right now I don't know if anyone I know was involved or not - I don't really know too many people who work on campus, and the ones I can think of probably wouldn't have been in the areas of the shootings. I'm a cub scout den leader and I some of the parents are Tech employees, so I'm really hoping that none of them were involved.

And it's my 40th birthday. This is NOT the way I wanted to remember this day. [V]

Such a damn waste. Thank God we don't have a Second Amendment here in the UK. In 1997 I moved back to the UK with my own family,( from South Africa) selling my and my wifes guns not only paid for our airfares, but also lifted a great burden from our lives. [:(]

sorry to hear of the lost of life, don't blame the guns the shooter could of used many more devices t kill those students and many more than he did.
skiprat if the gun laws where not as restricted, maybe less life would of been lost.
some of those students may of been carrying and could of stopped him sooner.

It is indeed a shame, and a tragic unexpected loss for the families involved. Our hearts and prayers go out to all of those involved!

But remember, folks, as tempting as it is for both sides of the political issue, don't take this political stance or the mods will lock the thread. We all have our opinions and views converning the 2nd Ammendment, but they have no place in this thread. AWTTWIS [;)]

The shooter could have used any number of means to take lives. He could have set a fire, and with the doors being chained, the losses could have been worse. If he wsa determined to do harm, I feel he would get it done no matter if guns were involved or not. My thoughts and prayers are with all of the families involved.

Our friend and member MDWine (Michael) has a son at Virginia Tech. I wrote to him to inquire as to the health and welfare of his son. I'm glad to report that Michael's son, Jacob, is unharmed. He has one friend that he knows was shot but will survive. He awaits word of his other friends. My heart aches for those lost, those injured and their family and friends. There's a lot of pain in the "Hokey Nation" today. My prayers are with them.

You are entitled to your opinions. But criticizing America is not the way to make friends. It is convenient to ignore the fact that similar incidents have happened in the UK and Japan where both countries have very stringent restrictions on firearms ownership. Remember, in the UK, you are SUBJECTS to the Queen. Here in America we are FREE CITIZENS. I also remind you of how that came to be.

This was a tragedy of monumental proportions. Words like 'sad' and 'sorrow' do not begin to explain the loss and suffering that will follow. This was the act of a single madman. Prayers for all affected. The lost, their family and friends and all of America.

I just got word from Jacob that the school is closing for a week. He will be coming home after the Convocation (sp?) today.

I am simply beside myself, I seem to be near tears every time I think about it. If this idiot had gone one building to the right, I may be in a different state of mind right now. Jacob was in class right next door...

It is definitely a sad Hokie Nation, to be sure... Thanks for all of your thought and prayers. It is nice to know that we can set aside our differences when things 'really count'...

This from a bridge in Charlottesville....

Michael, I'm so glad to hear that Jacob is okay! Anything else I might say is rather inconsequential, except that our prayers go with all involved.

Frank, if I offended you or anyone else with my comments, then I sincererly apologise. This of course was never my intention. I certainly was not deliberately insulting your great country.
From now on I will not reply to such posts in case they are similarly misunderstood.

Michael I am glad to hear he was not in that building. I cant imagine how hard it is going to be to go back when classes start again.

Stephen I was not offended by you saying how glad you were for your countries laws. You have a right to believe in that and feel that way. Frank don't come down so hard on him for liking the laws of the UK. I don't believe he was trying to offend anyone with his comment.

Lets keep this thread in a positive please. We now know that a IAP family member was very close to the shootings.

Oh Lord Michael, I'm so glad for you that Jacob is OK. So many other parents are grieving at this time, so sad I can't even imagine.

The shooter could have chosen any number of destructive ways to do his deeds. Maybe we could all just think about the families affected and take your own moment of silence to show support for them. Prey or do what you do but be thankful if you were not directly affected by this tragedy.

I just learned that one of our lifeguards at our local YMCA was killed at VA tech. Her brother (also a lifeguard) was in the YMCA tonight to sign some papers to take time off for his family.

We had an off-forum communication. All is well.

From another Hokie with a niece attending VT and is safe.
