I cut a few blocks of this wood a few years ago, dry and ready to use. From Northern California foothills, about 1,000 ft elevation. Really crazy grain in this stuff. I think it would look very neat on thicker pens that would show off the grain. Any guess as to the exact species?

Go to http://plants.usda.gov/java/profile?symbol=QUERC , and click on the CA map to get the county distibutions of each of the oaks found in CA . That should get you down to 8-10 potential candidates . Sand the end grain on a plain piece of the wood down to 220 grit , and look at it with a magnifying glass . If most of the pores are open , it is in the red/black oak family , and you can eliminate the white oaks . If most of the pores have thin membranes(tyloses) across them , do the reverse . Have fun , but it probably would have been easier to ID it as a live standing tree .
