Just got the whole grinding jig set up today and got the perfect angle i wanted on my bowl gouge. I mounted up a large white birch log on the rikon. I was turning it and it was cutting oh so nicely. I heard a weird pop as i progressed but i figured it was from something shaking on the bench. Well all of the sudden it stopped turning but i could here the motor. The tool rest didn't move in or anything or caught it. Opened up the pulley housing and found that the belt tore down the cent and fell off! Had to put a plastic bag around the blank, hopefully i can still save it.

I had my rikon for about 4 months when I read on line (in this forum I believe) some one complained that he replaced 3-4 belts on his rikon in a matter of weeks. Not wanting to be without my lathe I ordered a spare to keep on hand. That was well over a year ago, hundreds and hundreds of pens, and probably over a hundred other items including large very heavy odd shaped way out of balance logs etc. And I still have not had to use my spare belt, Maybe i have been lucky.
