Vacuum to dye without stabilization

If I just want to dye wood, can i use something like General Finishes water based dye with a vacuum?
Would I need to re-dry the wood? I assume so, but on pen blank type wood should not take too long, especially if diagonal cut.
Would oil based maybe work better? Trans tint type product in alcohol?

I have looked in the Library, in a lot of the individual forums here, page by page, and did a couple of searches, but never did find anything substantial on how to dye wood blanks. I have a special order for a pen and they want the blank to be the colors of the University of Montana Grizzlys...
