My wife and I are leaving early Saturday morning (right after my karaoke show around 3 a.m.) for Gatlinburg where we will be for a week. After that we have a couple of extra days for roaming before I go back to work on Wednesday morning.

Is there anything in the area that a penturner should make sure he sees?

I will be taking my laptop with me and, God willing, will be able to keep tabs on this site while we are on the road so feel free to throw in your two cents worth (OK make it a nickel)!

Arrowmont is right there in Gatlinburg. Not a pen place but lots of things to see in their Gallery. They also have an excellent bookstore and a place to observe classes in session. ( I've been told)

I agree w/ woodbutcher about Arrowmont. Also check Toolworld in Sevierville It is right on the main drag (next to Knifeworld. While you are checking out the tools, there is a kitchen place right near there for the MRS. Also go to the Arts and Craft area back off the main drag, I think that may be HWY 321. It is a little way out of town but it is a lot of folks who got away from the crass commercialism in the downtown area. Most of them have demos of a lot of their crafts. Shame we are heading to Orlando for the week or maybe we could have met for a cup of coffee. Have a great vacation.

I recommend you have a meal at the Apple Barn. Great food and some nice shops, too. Nothing turning related but it's on our "must stop" places when we are in the area. We always pick up some of the apple wines to bring home.

and... maybe we'll run into yall!! Mike and I are moving some furniture up to Johnson City and will be in Gatlinburg on saturday and Sunday morning. One of our "Must do" (or rather "dine") is the PAncake PAntry in Gatlinburg. His youngest has never been to the Smokeys, so we haven't quite decided what we can pack in for a day and a half (I have to be at work Sunday evening, darnit!) Probably will hit the aquarium and then the afternoon in the mountains. Cades Cove, Clingman's Dome...picnic somewhere. My kids love the Comedy Barn in Pigeon Forge- my oldest (27) thought it'd be corny, but said it was really funny & a better bargain for the $$. And agreed with Fifer on the Apple Barn-- go there at an odd time so you won't be waiting forever. Also---- go out where Pastor Bill recommends...its a nice relaxing drive.

LOTS of commericalism as he says too! I couldn't tell you the number of times I've been to the area (it was my family's fav place to spend Thanksgiving when married to the ex) so there are lots we don't do anymore, but often worth seeing for the first time. The space needle gives a nice view of the area, Ober Gatlinburg has an indoor ice rink and in the winter, articial snow w/ski lessons. AND my kids favorite: the Alpine Slide down the mountain (We'll proably do that this weekened too! I still love it!!) And you'll past 1253 outlet stores in Pigeon Forge & Sevierville. In all those years, we've yet to do Dollywood- but have heard good reviews. We did Dixie Stampede a couple of times...it was alright- kids loved it (they were late elementary to middle school age at the time) We also liked the Alabama Grille-- lots of country music memorabilia, mmusic from the group Alabama...and they had 'real' mashed potatoes and VERY good sweet tea (a must in the South from which so many restuarants are gauged lol)

one thing we never did and I always wanted to: Take a day trip into Asheville NC and see the Biltmore. Since we went at Thanksgiving, it was always done for Christmas by that weekend...but the ex wouldn't take time to go. One day I'll get there!

Drop Mick an email if you want... could meet up (and stand in line!) at the Pancake pantry Sunday morning! We'll be headed back after I stop at the scrapbook outlet in Sevierville..... lol Well, you can see I love the area b/c I've written and written LOL Plus I could go on about places we like to eat too!!! But will stop now. If ya'll do meet up, I can take a pic of you and Mike by his truck.... you'll see why then. LOL

We go down there 3-4 times a year for long weekends. All of the above are good, my must stops for food, Pancake Pantry Gatlinburg, Alamo steak House (the one in Gatlinburg on 321, not the one in Pigeon Forge), the Old Mill restaurant in Pigeon Forge and lastly the Smokey Mountain Brewery in Waldron's Landing at stop light 3 in Pigeon Forge. Arrowmont is a must and the Crafters loop just outside Gatlinburg just off Rt 321. About 4-5 miles of shops with works of local artists crafters and woodworkers.

Hey Tip,
If you are driving and have time, you might think about swing back through Knoxville and take a gander at Jeffries Wood Works, Inc... he has quite a selection of exotic woods... 8807 Valgro Road, Knoxville, Tn 37920 Bob & Cynthia Jeffries.. 865 573 5876

It's a lumber warehouse, their show room is the warehouse, but he has a number of table set up with lots of blocks and blanks.. pretty good prices too.

Map coordinates from Gatlinburg to Jeffries. (edit: I actually routed it backwards from Jeffries to Gatlinburg - sorry)

On our way back. Great time and saw most of everything in the area. Really enjoyed the breakfast with "The Honeymooners". Really friendly family and great conversationalists! Thank you all!!
