Just got back the other day from spending 6 days in Orem, Utah attending the symposium. They had a good turn out, over 500 attendees. If you haven't attended this, mark your calander as it is always a great show. Things started out Wed morning with the crowd lining up at the Craft Supply huge closeout sale in the warehouse, there are always great buys to be had and stuff you buy because it is so cheap you will probablly never use  Free demos went on all day until 4 pm at CSU, the penturners had their own section and Russ F, Kurt H. & I think Bill did demos there. Then there were drawings for door prizes. That night was the Pen Rendezvous and was standing room only, I guess 100 plus attended and there were more demos. The sympoium started Thurs and went through Sat. Great selection of demonstrators. The campus at UVU was wonderful and the surrounding scenery of Orem spectacular. The work in the instant gallery was amazing as ussual. This year I cleaned up, bought a nice piece at the live auction after the banquet on Friday night, then bought a few peices in the instant gallery and another 7 pieces at the silent auction! :) The only down side from the event is that this year there was no tool demonstrators at the event. It is always fun to walk around and kill some time watching demos of tools and seeing other products in use you have not tried. I hope it comes back to this event, as I really missed it. Here are a few pics.

Always wanted to go but not durning Mother's day week. Bad timing.

Made it back in plenty of time Sunday to take the Mrs. and family out to dinner. No dog house here. :)

The Arizona symposium is coming Febuary 18,19,20th 2011, should have a great slate of demonstrators as well and the facilities and event is top notch. Don Ward will be a demonstrator at this event as well.

I had a fun time also bumming around with Anthony during the non-symposium time. We found a BBQ place last year and visited there often during the symposium. They even gave us complimentary desert since we ate there so often.

there were 9 penturning rotations with great attendance. I hope penturning is included again next year. Chicago and SWAT in August and the DWR in Phronix in Feb.

I made it home in time to give my wife the mother's day gift I picked up in Utah....no dog house here.

Do a good turn daily!
Don

Gonna try to make one next year. Arizona sounds like a great one since it will still be cold here!!

Greg,

I had the opportunity to attend my 5th year at the Utah Woodturning Symposium and agree that eveyone should make the attempt to attend at least one year. I am fortunate to be a local, which makes it a lot easier.

This was my first time at the symposium. It surpassed my expectations. There were many great demonstrations by turners who know how to teach. The gallery was truly inspiring. Penturning was very well represented. Kudos to Don Ward Russ Fairfield, Kurt Hertzog and many others helping to raise the bar in pen turning.

I came back with many ideas but offset them with money spent on some great deals.

This is well worth the effort!

Steve

Watch it there Paul......bald I can accept, old, not there yet

This was the first thing I turned after coming back and watching Clead Christiansen turn some nuts. Next up some Peppermills, saw Paul Chilton's demo on that :) Then some modified slimline Don Ward made. (but I'll never tell that Don glued his pen tube to the pen mandrell during his demo) you will never hear that from me

It was a great event. Learned a lot and everyone was so willing to share tips and tricks about wood turning. This was my third time and I will go back. I drove and made it back home in time for Mother's day. Besides the demonstrations it is a great chance to meet turners from all over the world.

I hope to attend next year...I am going to the AAW in Hartford next month since it is only a 2hr drive....is there much of a difference between the two?

Are they any videos of the presentations? One of the photos posted appears to have camera pointed at the lathe. Or was that just for a screen for those too far from the presenter?

Thanks,

I wish I could muster the finances and time to attend, it has to be an educational experience just looking at some of the turnings in person, not to mention all the work shops and demonstrations.

They are much the same except the AAW will be a bigger symposium with more demonstrations and big name turners. Plus, they will have a trade show and vendor's area with lots of turning stuff to see and purchase. Craft Supplies is the big supporter of the Utah Sympsoium and hence no trade show or vendors. Purchases must be from Craft Supplies. I did jiss the vendor area this year.

I also heard that Don glued a tube to the mandrel and someone reported that he turned a one piece slimline with the nib end and clip end reversed.:biggrin::biggrin:

Do a good turn daily!
Don
