Last week posted a gloat about finding some flame box elder on one of the back country roads.. today I rough turned a bowl out of a piece... the wood was so wet that it slung a line of water across the shop. Maybe a new way to dry wood... centrifugal force.. put it on the lathe and spin it really fast for a couple of hours??

The bowl is 11 in dia and about 4.5 in high. Some really nice flame on one side.

That's a beaut!!!!!! I sure don't like the smell of wet box elder, but the results can be impressive. Nice form and design.

Chuck ... Hope your bowl doesn't warp much as it dries.

To prevent the splitting and such try this tried and true method developed by Steven Russell - also an IAP member, but rarely posts.

Look down the left side for BOILING WOOD. Read the article and IF you decide to try his tried and proven method I bet you that you will be in for a very pleasant surprise.

I have used his method for about three or so years now and my failure rate from splitting, etc. has dropped from considerable to almost nothing.

Others here on the Forum have used it as well and all reported very favorable results.

I use the turkey fryer from Northern since Harbor Freight doesn't carry one. The unit comes complete with everything you need except the refillable propane tank. Look at the unit here: http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_6970_200186224_200186224

Have fun!

Chuck, that's an impressive piece. But is it Box Elder? Looks a lot like Ambrosia Maple, but maybe it's just the light. Thought I saw a few bug holes too, but then I've been working on my apartment building all day and I'm not seeing so well!

I love the shape.

Dale, when I first saw it I thought maple too, but the marks are blood red.. I don't think you get the red in Ambrosia maple.
