Here is a piece of Hickory and it is untouched except for planing a smooth surface on one side. Would this make a beautiful and unique bowl?

How thick is that slab? Sure is a pretty piece of wood.

Looks like there is a pretty goods sized crack on the left hand side. That could pose a problem if it runs very deep.

Looks awesome! Yes a definite bowl candidate and a natural edge too.

I will soak the crack with CA before you go thin though.

Wow, is that normal for hickory? I would get it stabilized and use it as a platter or two. I would be scared of blowing it, trying to make a bowl. ( I've Never made a bowl though, uses too many pen blanks!!!!)[:D]

Cool wood. I know that some bowls are done with cross-sections, but most are done with short plank type chunks.
That should make a sweet bowl. Ditto on the fear of blowing it up.

Archie, what you have is a very dangerous piece of Hickory there. You need to box it up and send it to me so I can dispose of it properly. I am a biologist, after all. [}:)][:p]

Like the others have said... Yes, do a bowl (or two), and use the cut offs for pens.

Archie, I think we are all agreed, it needs to be pens. If you chop it up now, you can send a bit to each person that has answered your post[}:)]

I wish I had this piece of wood but the story is: I passed by a garage sale this afternoon and saw this big Bandsaw and stopped with the intention of buying it if it was for sale. Well,as luck would have it the person just sold the Bandsaw 5 minutes before I got there and I spotted this hanging on his wall. I talked to him about it and he tells me that the rest of the log is around but he didn't know just exactly where it is. Of course I asked him to call me if he locates it. This is just a slab he cut from the log. I am hoping he can find it and that it is like this all the way thru. One thing that scares me is that he may have already cut it into firewood. [V]
