It is very unfortunate that i am posting this message. It has come to my attention that there were several people in the recent homebrew trade project that simply signed up to take advantage of other people and their generosity. There are still people that have not sent out their packages. I understand you are busy, and this is a hobby, and life happens, and etc. etc. etc. But if you did not intend to send a package you should have never signed up. and if you did intend to send a package, and life just got in the way, LET SOMEONE KNOW. You surely already accepted the package that was sent to you.

There were also people that got what they felt like was not much more than a scrap box, or a failed attempts box. It is really sad that people would put this stuff in a box and knowingly send it to another turner. Especially with the knowledge that they are more than likely going to get some of someone elses best pieces. When i packed my box... I asked myself one simple question: What, as a TURNER, would i LOVE to see?" I don't want a box of trash to be my representation as a pen blank maker no more than i want some crappy reject slimline to be my representation as a penmaker.

So, to those of you that got the short end of the stick... I am terribly sorry. This reason alone is why i will never be the starter of such trades in the future.

And those that did the stick shortening... You are the reason i will never again stuff a USPS box for a trade. The thought of one of you members getting my box sadens me for those blanks!

P.S. Please dont try to read into this trying to figure out who got shorted and etc. I am very happy with my trade results, as i am sure the person that recieved my box is equally happy etc. etc.

That's too bad. I thought the whole trade thing was a great idea. I know I was little late but I let my partner know every step of the way. Hopefully you will change your mind about future trades.

With a large membership such as ours this will always be a risk with trades and purchases etc. Ive got it happening now in fact where a seller wont acknowledge my 'not received' notifications for goods purchased.
Fortunatley, people like this are few but it does still hurt a little when you're on the receiving, or in this case, the 'not receiving' end.
I just hope that the offenders put things right,,why give yourselves a bad reputation over a few blanks? Doesnt say much for them does it.:frown:
Always a great pity when posts like this are necessary.
Regards, Bill

You might consider talking to one of the moderators about this as well. Maybe they can step in and encourage people. (Or have Neil visit them, lol)

I'm sure as well that some of your participants possibly never cast a blank in their life up till now. It's sure to have happened at least in a few of the cases. That is the same situation as a pen swap. You have guys that make pens worth hundreds swapping with a newbie that just made his first pine slim. I guess what I am saying is that if you received something in swap, it might actually be the best that person can do up to this point in time. That should be an obvious inherent risk of participating in a swap. If you received nothing at all..well that's a real shame and in-excusable of course, but always remember that if you do receive something, that it might be something someone worked really hard on. Everyone has a different level of expertise and everyone has different opinions on what is great. Why just look at my good buddy Ken (Bitshird)...he thinks his vw bug with the hind end of a deer stuck in the grill is the most pimpin ride and I think you should drive a silverado with chrome wheels! It's all opinions.

Wow, that's a nice sentiment.

Maybe you shouldn't be involved in another swap if that is the way you feel. I had planned to stay out of this thread, but since my name came up in it I will post. I didn't get involved in the swap from the beginning because I didn't think I was going to have the time. Now that I have just read your post, I am happy that I didn't join in, not because of a couple of packages either getting lost or not being sent, but because of what I just read. I have been involved in swaps in the past and can say that not everything I have received was what I would send to someone, but I never begrudged what someone sent to me. In a pen swap, I try to send something with some meaning to me, something that I would be proud to carry. That could mean a slimline or it could mean a limited edition pen, whatever it was, it would be done to the best of my ability at the time. We are not all at the same level of pen turning or blank making.

As is frequently the case, Ron!!!

You probably have only heard the "horror stories".

Well, let me tell you OUR experience. We received the blanks as promised from a caster who said he had not done many. They were GREAT. I posted pics and we are happy.

Now, Dawn took a while to send hers. Wanted to make something special. Finally decided just GET IT DONE, so she sent out a box of stuff. Recipient emailed telling her it was TOO much and she was SO generous, etc. BUT, HE sent US a box of stuff to "even it out". Well, he sent WAY too much REALLY COOL STUFF, so Dawn will be sending HIM more to even it out!!!

In short, EVERYONE is happy. And, it looks like we have a new trading partner.

Sometimes it helps to know about the successes when you evaluate the "fruits of your efforts!"

Ron, It's too bad you feel this way, unfortunately things like this do occur, but I thank you for organizing the trade to begin with, I know I was am certainly happy with the package I received and I hope the person I sent my stuff to was happy with it. Don't hold the actions of the minority against the majority, in dealing with quite a few members on this site, both in trades, purchases and sales, I have found this to be a great and charitable bunch of people. I am sorry you happened to stumble on some that are not the pillars of society, keep in mind, you'll probably find about the same ratio of honest to unethical people on here on this site as you would in the town or city where you live, basically this is just another microcosm of people of a like minded nature. Most of us are good to our word, but also most of us are human, so there will be the occasional screw up, I also think that you should contact one of the Moderators, and let them know who the miscreants are so they won't be allowed to prosper with out consequence.

I will say that the trade was for 3 blanks, you kind of caused a problem with sending a box full of stuff.I understand sending a few extras(as I think I did),but a full box just makes things harder on those who received much less.I received blanks from what I think is a new caster(I'm rather new myself),and I got a very nice pen from one of the blanks(need to put together and post). Its the nature of the beast, and I will continue to jump in on these when time allows me to do so.99% of the folks on the IAP are great people, just like anything a few bad apples can make a group look bad.I to Thank You for running this trade I had fun with it.Victor

And I promise I will even turn the blanks I got into a pen as soon as I can get the deers hind end out of my VW's front end, (it doesn't even have a grill!! but I did replace the VW logo with the Anarchy symbol) it was built by smart people, I use it to chase parts for our my Ford my wife's Toyota my sons Chevy and my daughters Chrysler.
So far her Saturn seems to almost runs as dependable as my VW, hard to believe it was made by GM, in America.:biggrin::biggrin:

Neil, I think that he was referring to the people that didn't send their package out at all. I don't think he meant people that might be new to this. I know I wanted to make some newer blanks up but ran out of time so I sent ones that I had all ready made plus some fillers to make sure the post office didn't break them.

I did not sign up but if someone needs a few blanks let me know. I often cast four or five blanks and turn only one or two of them. I like the wasted wood castings and have several extras. No one needs to get shorted and I would be happy to help out.
Drop me a pm. Jon

That's odd... I just re-read the thread up to your post and didn't see you name anywhere. You weren't involved in the trade, so your opinion means NOTHING to me on this matter... And if you re-read my original post, you will note that i plainly said that i will not be trading in the future. My "sentiment" on not sending a box full of stuff i worked hard to buy, and pour to some bum that signed up strictly to get a free box of homebrew blanks is just that... MY SENTIMENT.

When i first started turning, i spent alot of time on another forum and shorted several people in trades. Not on purpose, but because my skill was not equal. So i stopped trading, and started practicing. I am not knocking beginners. I am a beginner myself, only on my second gallon of PR.

I am knocking the people that don't send a package, or reply to emails, or PM's. I am knocking the people that do actually put their brewing trash in a box and ship it out.

I personally, was tickled with my homebrew results all the way around! I got to get some valuable feedback from another turner on my blanks, and they seemed to really like them. I recieved some really really deep, rich blanks from the trade, as well as free extras in the box!

I ALSO recieved several PM's and emails about boxes not showing up with no replies from the sender at all... I recieved messages about boxes so embarrasing, the recipient didn't even want to take a picture of it, and was reluctant to even bring it up at all.

To be totally real about it... This post was more aimed at the slow shippers, and the trash senders... If i can get them angry enough at me to send their packages, or rethink what they ship next time, then i am happy... If it upsets some people that are in no way involved with the situation...... pfft.

And i agree.... AT LEAST 99% of the people here are AWESOME! I learned more about pens in a one day chapter meeting than i could learn in a few years on my own. And that isn' anything compared to the TONS i have learned by reading tutorials and thread after thread. Some lessons were easy to learn.... some were painful and embarrasing.

Either way, The people here have kept me on the right track more times than a conductor!

CHUGGA CHUGGA CHUGGA CHUGGA

CHOOOOO CHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Reread post #4 and you will see my name, but since my opinion means nothing to you, I guess the this is pointless. Good luck in the future.

I know my package was received. But never saw a pen turned from any of them. I turned some of what I sent so while it may not have been the best, at least it was something useful. I bought strictly for this trade thinking it was for relatively new casting folks. If my stuff I sent didn't work out. Sorry

Ummm and if Neil comes to visit me he can give me lessons lol.

James

Oh and mine may have been delayed, mine was going overseas and had to clear customs... again nothing I could control

I have been away from the forum for personal reasons and this thread made me realize that I have not been doing my job. I will be posting rules/guidelines for all trades and swaps in the future. Ones that are started without being approved will simply be deleted. It is best if such events are supervised and rants are eliminated. Stay tuned.

Ok. So you are Neil i guess? I apologize. I simply know you as your handle. I'm not positive, but i am pretty sure that your name was brought up as a joke.

And don't take it personal, but you are right. Your opinion ON THIS MATTER carries little weight. You said yourself, you didn't sign up to begin with, but you have an opinion about me getting upset about people getting ripped off? Forget trying to help a guy get a reasonable conclusion to the problem... It is much more fun to assume you understand the point of the conversation, and create an opinion based on this assumption.

See there.... the trade has already been picked up by the PROS!

fwiw: I didn't actually "start" the trade. I asked if anyone would be interested and people immediately started signing up, so i ran with it. I even mentioned in my original post that a mod or someone similar should govern the trade.
