Under the ocean 3d pen

Hi im new to the forum and pen turning. 2018 October i first started getting into wood working and resin Casting, teached myself everything through google. Bought a lathe 3 weeks ago, and this is my 6th pen turned. Made some ugly but effective "tube in mold" molds, and build a 3d ocean surface/coral whatever you want to call it around the tube. It looks like a 3d ocean surface /coral inside and glows at night.
I will add some better quality pictures later.
Im from South Africa, and would like to sell my pens,i dont really have an income right now. In your honest opinion, is there money in making unique pens like these, and for about how much can such a pen sell for?

Hello Bjorn,

Looks like you are off to a good start. For just six pens you should be proud of yourself.

I am impressed that you are already casting this quickly.

I would suggest you try a few larger kits. Personally I prefer a little less wasp waist look in a pen profile, but lots of folks have a different opinion there.

This forum is a great place to see different styles and learn.

I agree with Tim, you technique seems good and your concept is outstanding. I expect you are using the slimlines because the kits are cheap on your limited income, but I feel a different kit would benefit your goals greatly.

Something with a longer, single tube would show off your casting better. Looks like a kit called "executive" is still lower cost, single tube and may work nicely.

It would be extremely difficult for most of us from the USA to advise on pen value in your country, so hopefully some of your countrymen who are members see this and respond, or others who have experience there.

Welcome to IAP Bjorn. I commend you on the progress you have made. I also agree with the comments made above - well merited.

On the second set of pictures, the pen on the bottom of the group of four is very attractive to me. I will still agree that it needs to be a bit thinner, but your accents are well done.

Stick around and keep asking questions as you have the need.

Thanx for feedback guys. I took advice and tried the centre band thing. I used a scrap piece of resin laying around for the centre band. I like this thicker look without thin centre band.

Im using Charnwood W815 Mini Lathe with mt1 pen mandrel and some hss chisels and also easywood carbide cutters.
