I received a new HF sale flyer today. I have been waiting for their ultra to go on sale and sure enough. They have two that are on sale. The first one is a one pint version without heat for $24.99 The second one is a 2.5 liter on sale for $69.99 which has heat. My question is on the one pint model would it be just as good if you heated the water before you put in your PR the thing has a automatic shut off after three minutes and is also stainless steel? I also have not read much about alot of casters using the ultrasonic cleaners. Was wondering if they had been replaced by something else

IMO, the most value of ultrasonics is for clear casts (labels, snakeskins, etc) and minimizing the formation of air bubbles. The pint one is a little small; if you do decide to get one, you will be much happier with the 2.5 liter. Ultrasonics will help get the air out of solution in the resin prior to casting. Casting under pressure helps keep what air is in the resin in solution. They are different methods to accomplish the same thing which is bubble free clear casts. Some also use neither and coax the bubbles out with a nail or pin. When I do clear casts, I use ultrasonics and pressure for insurance. Its just a matter of how confident you are in your method and what risk of failure you want to take.

I'd like to point out another often overlooked use of the ultrasonic cleaners- reducing clumping of pigments. Many times I've watched pigment clumps hit the bottom of the cup and then slowly disintegrate as the ultrasonics worked on them. Not guaranteed, but certainly an improvement over stirring forever.

Which is right for you? Only you can answer that.

Do you do large batch casting?
Multiple colors?

Personally I have the 2.5L one, and sometimes wish it was bigger when I have 3 cups of resin in it. Depth isn't the issue (I rarely have liquid 1 inch deep), it's space for the cups. The stainless steel interior is priceless when you use the wrong type of cup and the bottom melts out (DAMHIKT).

For doing non-clear, multi-color casts heating the resin is less important. In fact, the price in working time it comes with often makes me not use it. (That, and it's not terribly necessary in Phoenix in July)

I often leave my resin in the cleaner for 10-20 min- some before the catalyst is added and as much as possible after. So resetting the 3min timer might get old. The 2.5L one goes up to 8min.
