Anyone know a good affordable (or free) typing software? I need one that can be configured to a laptop keyboard.

My 2 fingers are getting worn off with all these typing...besides I need to post faster!!! [}:)][}:)][}:)] Bwa-ha-ha!!!

THANKS!!!

Dario, there are several available. Off the top of my poor excuse for a brain, I can't recall the names of the more popular ones. But, I'll bet some searches will bring them up. The most useful ones were written for grade-schoolers. Not an insult, just a fact.

My kids use "Mavis Beacon" at school and at home. I found a older release on ebay for about $10. seems to work pretty good, they can both type a lot faster than I can.

mavis Beacon is the industry leader in commercial typing instruction.

There is another one called MasterKey that is shareware and is really cool.

It is for mac and pc and has configurable keyboard including dvorak layout.

Dario,
We homeschool our kids and use Mavis Beacon. It's a great software and very user friendly. I think we picked ours up on clearance at Office Depot for less than $20.

Thanks guys,

I think I will go with Mavis Beacon...they are basically giving them away on eBay now. Yeah, they do get you on the S&H but still less than $10.00 total.

Oh great guys. If Dario learns to type faster, he will post more often. We'll never catch up. Dario, don't respond to this just to add to your total[}:)].

Hi Dario. When I was in High School. I took a typing course. 2 1/2 easy credits and the classroom was full of girls [:D]
I never dreamed that typing would actually come in handy!

I had a TRS-80 Color Computer in high school (early 80's) and could sorta type before I took typing class. The annoying thing was that the class used IBM Selectric typewriters, and the keyboard layout was different - seems like the parentheses in particular were different.

Dario,
As long as you're (re?) learning touch typing you might as well learn the dvorak keyboard setup which is actually configured to help you type faster, instead of the qwerty setup that was designed specifically to slow typing so original mechanical typewriters didn't jam as often. You can switch just about any keyboard configuration to dvorak in windows.

Gary, I'm sure I'm a couple or three decades older than you. When I got my first newspaper job, while I was a sophomore in high school in 1953, I also took a typing class. Of course, it was all girls, except me. We used manual, really old style, typewriters. Little did I know then that learning typing would define my life. One of the most valuable skills I ever learned. Newspaper days are behind me but I still bang on the keyboard for more creative expression.
