I found a way to use my bandsaw today...temporarily. I need to do some balancing and have to leave the car outside the garage to do it but it worked .

Anyway, I milled some TX Mountain Laurel from fresh wood and some from aged wood for more than a year. The branches are similar sized (about 3"-5" diameter).

The difference is amazing. The aged/cured pieces are very bright colored but the freshly harvested ones are dull yellow. I know Curtis have been advocating the use of roots only since the branches are "dull". He is right of course but aged branches is near the color of the roots and shows some potential.

You be the judge.

TX Mt Laurel (oiled to show actual color & are very close to actual)
5 - yellowish & dull blanks from fresh wood
8 - brighter colored blanks from aged/cured wood

WOW, WOW, WOW! Full of color! I like that.

I pulled a mountain laurel out of my stash last week to make a pen (next week) and it is one I got from you back in the spring of this year. It is colorful too.

Dario that is some good lookin wood. I have a sierra made from a piece i got from you in the birthday bash last year that i think is one of the best lookin pens i have. I actually have been saving the other piece of it for something special one day.

Dario,
Any idea how long the fresh ones would take to turn the colors of the aged ones.I have some that is the yellowish cream flavor that my uncle gave me. I knew Curtis uses Mt Laurel but wasnt too impressed with what I got.....

Lupe,

The cream colored must be the sapwood as you can see on some of mine. It turned grayish as it got "weathered"/"spalted". I am not sure if the fact that this is weathered (stored outside) helped or not. The age of the wood/tree also has something to do with it. I think, the older it is, the better it gets.

The richer colored ones are about a year old on mine and the yellowish/dull ones were collected last week. YMMV.

Hope this helps.

Dario, do you have to gloat like that???

"Look what I have that you don't"

=)

LOL...It is a teaser and a marketing strategy. It works too!

Sweet, now if you are looking to dispose of a few keep me in mind.

Dario, Are any of those for sale? Had to ask, since I didn't see any pricing, maybe I was just hoping.

These will all be sold, I just need to take some pics (showing all sides not just the nice ones ). Expect it to be posted within 2 days. For fairness, it will be first post, first served.

I do have some weathered branches (some are cracked just like the ones I milled these from some are perfect for bottle stoppers) I can sell those cut to 5" - 5.5" or 10" - 11" lengths.

Thanks.
