Okay, with the newborn (well, he's 7 weeks today) I have lots of little breaks where I can sit in front of the television for a short period of time. I don't have time to watch long movies or anything, but it occurs to me that there have got to be some woodworking or similar shows that I can search for and set the DVR to record. Anyone have any suggestions? At the moment, we have DirecTV (although that may soon change, we are both very dissatisfied), so channel choices are mostly not an issue.

I am recording NYW, of course, but can't find all the shows I used to record in St. Louis. Is Woodworks off the air? Did DIY Network get rid of all the shows they used to (shorten and) rerun? Besides NYW, the only thing I found right away is Woodwright's Shop, and it conflicts - I can only record one at the moment. (You'd think with a 2-tuner DVR you could get both, but that's part of that "may soon change" thing above.)

Anyway, I'm rambling. Anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks,

daniel

Don't go to Dish... ain't much better...

I know with a new baby, time is limited, but if you have time to sit in front of your computer... Go to Google Videos and google for woodturning videos, pen turning, bowl turning, etc....... I have about 30 or so I've down loaded... they're mostly Youtube type and run 5-20 minutes duration and you may have to look for parts 2 and 3 and 4 and etc..... Some are pretty well done and quite interesting to watch.
BTW, if the newbie is a potential wood turner, you can sit with him/her and watch together... might speed up your new shop partner's learning curve.

And in case I did't earlier, congratulations on the newbie... one of greatest days of my life was when my son was born.

DIY no longer has the woodworking shows, it's remodeling and landscaping for the most part. If you have a 2 tuner DVR and it is hooked up correctly, you can record both shows at the same time or watch one while recording the other. When recordind 2 channels at the same time, you will have to watch one of them irreguardless.

You'd think so, but this is the third DVR we've received and each one has some failure like this. I believe at one time it would record two things at once, but it is now acting like it doesn't have a second tuner, so...no go.

Chuck, good idea on the web videos - I'll have to look into that. However, in this case, I'm looking for stuff to watch while feeding or calming the boy, which I usually do in the swivel rocker. But if I find enough, I can make a DVD....hmm...I'm going to have to think about that one.

Another topic but I have AT&T uverse and it works great (and no contracts). I never had a problem and their DVR can record up to 4 channels simultaneously. May sound crazy but I maxed this limit a few times

I think the maximum number recorded is equivalent to 250 hours (about half if all are HD).

I have DirectTv and the two-tuner box, and can record two shows simultaneously, and watch a previously recorded show while those two are recording .. I do it all of the time .. you have a bum-unit ... you might want to buy the $6 per month service plan before you ""notice"" that the unit is broken .. unless it is still under warranty ..

It's the 3rd one. If the warranty is less than 6 months, we may be hosed, but I think we may just consider canceling. Frankly, I'm getting tired of the $2-$3 hikes every few months. And the constant telemarketing trying to upsell additional services.

Check the listings for your PBS station. Tim Yoder has Woodturning Workshop. With the new digital signals our PBS station has 3 channels and it's on about 4 times a week. Not to mention New Yankee Workshop, Wood Smith shop, etc.
