I will be in NYC for a week in June08 on business from South Africa. Are there any stores that stock turning/pen supplies in the Manhattan area? Have tried searching the web but with no luck.

Would really appreciate any info.[?]:)

Thanks
Mike

Checked the Woodcraft website, only store they got in NY is in Rochester, and apparantly(per mapquest) that is 333 miles (says 5 hours) from NYC.

Then I thought of PSI (Penn State Industries), not my first choice, they have one retail showroom at 2381 Philmont Ave, Huntingdon Valley, PA 19006-6236. Again per mapquest, that is only 86 miles from NYC, looks to be a little north of Philadelphia, And Huntingdon Valley, PA is about 18 miles from Philly, thats just 1 pricy cab ride away.

Amtrak appears to have a route called Acela Express out of Penn Station in NY that will go to philly for anywhere from $43-$135(business class) one way.

You would be looking at like maybe 6 hours roundtrip(just traveling, not shopping) and at least $150 for cabs and trains.

Never been there myself, but if I was looking to go somewhere on a trip to NYC this might be one of my options, depends on how bad I want to get there I guess.

OR, you could try calling the shops on this list to see if any of them stock woodturning supplies: http://yp.yahoo.com/ypResults.py?st...007&msa=5600&slt=40.71463&sln=-74.005806&cs=4

There is a woodcraft in lower Conn. I believe in Orange ct. that might be the closest bet, I have been to psi and it isn't easy to find, but it was worth the trip. If I think of anything else I'll post Howard

The closest Connecticut Woodcraft to NYC would be in Norwalk Ct. That's about 50 miles from Manhattan. The one in Orange is actually half way up the coast.

I don't think he sells any kind of pen kits or parts, but
"Art Brown & Bro., The International Pen Shop is at 2 West 46th St., NYC 10036

He's a pretty exclusive pen shop that sells a lot of pens that look very much like what the artisans on this site make... might be an interesting excursion if you have time.

I have been to this wood craft store. The train ride will be about 1 hr long +/- , then get a cab to take you there, this will cost about $10 each way. Pen kits and tools of all kinds.

The couple that own the store are nice folks. The guy offered to drive me to the train station if I was still there when he closed up shop. They have a woodworking shop up stairs. Probably all the tools one has in an average shop. People pay a monthly club fee and are able to use the shop whenever they are open.

Some people here have bought wood from woodcraft (bigger items, bowl blank size I think) and when they got it back home have found out that the wood is still wet. If you are planning on buying some, keep this in mind.

Enjoy your stay in NY. Hope that you have plenty of time for your self while there.

Rob; That is an interesting idea about using the tools. I will mention it to the local Woodcraft store people when I get over there next.

The Woodcraft in Norwalk has about a quarter of the pen making and woodturning items that the Orange store has. The orange store is about thirty minutes past the Norwalk store. I go to both of them and the Orange store is much better. If you go there the man to talk to is Scott. He is a wood turner and knows the most about turning in the store. The Norwalk store owner knows very little about pen turning or the kits. The Norwalk store is called the Woodworkers Club and you can rent time in the shop for an extremely high rate.

For me it's always fun to visit the stores and be able to touch and see the stuff for myself, but you could also order some stuff from ArizonaSilhouette, Crafts Supply USA, BearToothWoods or any other site and have it shipped to an address in NYC where you can pick it up. That would certainly save on shipping. You could order it a week in advance to make sure it is there for you to take home. Just an idea...thought I'd mention it.

Hi Mike,
Here is a link to the MTA Metro North train schedules and map. To catch these trains, you have to get them from Grand Central train station. The East and South Norwalk stations are listed. That store is just about between the two stations and a few miles inland.

It looks like you would have to go to the Milford or West Haven stations to get to Orange. From there get a taxi. I don't know if there is public transportation from the train stations to Orange, but there might be. Maybe wolftat can recommend something.

I go to NY a few times a month. Let me know when you are up there. Maybe we can meet up and have some coffee or a beer. Are you bringing any blanks from home for a face to face swap by chance?

:D

Rob, thanks for the links. The way things stand I am not taking any clothing on the trip, 20kg weight limit and I've already got 2 Wild Olive trees packed!:):) I'll post closer to departure and maybe we can set something up, another tree may just fit into my wifes bags.

Let me know when you want to go to the Woodcraft store. I'll meet you at the train station and I'll drive you to both stores and you can check them both out. Less cab fare means more supplies.

If for any reason I can't make it Neil (Wolftat) is my brother and he will be there.
