Well I took the plunge - got 50% coupon for Michaels and bought some PR.
Looked around for molds at Michaels and couldn't find anything and got home and found a rectangle old tupperware container. Will this work as a mold?

From my understanding that will work. anything with a 5 or above in the triangle. I believe that will fine. until you get up and going and than get some of Charlie's Resin Saver Molds!

The molds I finally found I got online from a place called Mr. Art or something like that. they look like tupperware to me only the corners are a little more square (More wasted acrylic if you ask me) I recently got my first set of silicon molds but have not had time to try them out. plus the silicon molds tend to be expensive so unless you know you are going to make a good run at casting I would not take that plunge. they will save you resin in the long run though.

The recycling codes of 1, 2, or 5 are good for casting. Definatley don't use anything with 6 as it is styrene and will start melting in seconds.

Oppps thanks so very much for the update there. I was a bit backwards there. THANKS MUCH for the correction! I love this IAP place!!!!!!

Depending on what you want to cast you can use CPVC pipe prescription pill bottles clear plastic tube. Make your own from cutting boards. There is a bunch of ways to make or buy molds at very little cost. One of the tutorials I looked at for feather casting used thin sheet metal for the sides of the mold and wood caps with round tapered plugs for the ends. Be creative look around. Have fun.

It's worked for me..................After a couple of casts, the container warped & got all knarly ~ but it was cheap enough to replace.

Have fun,
Tim

I tried making my own sillicone mold without much luck.. Then I came across a box of deck screws in a plastic tupperware type box.. The box was 2 1/2 " high, about 5 1/4" long and 4" wide..

Like this one.. but a lower version and its pretty close to being square corners.

Works excellent so far. Casted 4 worthless woods and just casted a slab of coffee beans. Give it a squeeze and it pops right out of the plastic mold.

Mold release.. I wiped the inside with dblo with a paper towel before pouring the alumilite in.

Thanks for the input - got my 1st casts done

Well - The 1st cast took over 2 days to cure. It is the dark one. I finally put the mold in front of my heater in the shop and that did it. I don't think I put enough hardener in it and it is quite translucent. I was going for green and got yuck. The 2nd one came out in less than 2 hours and I think looks much better.

Jeff, don't discard the YUCK casting. They may surprise you! The best casting I turned out looked like garbage out of the mold, but made my best pen yet... :)

Casting is clearly an art of trial and error- but you never know what one will turn out like until you turn it.

I've been turning round between centers, to see what surprise is inside, then if it looks worthwhile, I'll drill it out and tube it up.

WOW! 100+ posts for me!!!!!!! I must be getting something valuable out of the IAP!!!!

1st Cast Pens

Well here are the finished products.
Made a slim from the ugly blank - my wife loved it.
The 2nd is a Sierra - the yellow mixed a little to much with the red so it is kind've orange/red with a little yellow. Hard to show that in the picture.
All in all I am happy with the results and enjoyed the process so will probably be working on some more casting.

Prescription pill bottles? Thanks for that tip. I've got some I could cast a table leg with! :rotfl:
Seriously, I've got a good supply of different sizes I replenish monthly. I'm definitely gonna try that.

Currently at the .99 cent only store thaey have some silicone molds and also some at Dollar Tree that are the perfect size and a good price

Looks like you're using PR. Timing the Gel on that is a trick- which is
why I included gel times in a lot of the recipes in the Color library

Basically- the more gelled it is when you pour, the better your color definition will be. The catch is if you wait any too long it doesn't pour at all.

does this Charlie's Resin Saver Molds have a web site where do we see the molds he has

Here's the thread where it all started. I would say you can search for
ResinSaver, but it gets spelled all sorts of ways so you might miss it anyway.

I don't have a web site, I've only been selling them to the members here.
Besides.. I'm not that web savvy. Websites should show some class and
taste. In these matters, I'm just not qualified.

thank you they look great, I think I sent you a PM if you can send me the current prices and what pens you have i know I want a 7mm one and im not sure what you call the desinger foutain pen if you hAVE that may another depends what you have

Jeff, I have some dyes and pigments over here if you want to experiment a bit and see what works best or how it works at all. I don't have a lot but it will give you some idea of how powders work in comparison to the dyes etc. I have not done alot of casting myself but am looking for an excuse to get motivated again. I want to go some stoppers and got a couple of stopper molds a while back. I have also been thinking of getting some alumilite. so if this takes off for you we may be able to go together and get some. Maybe some of the other Reno people will want in on that also. Knock the cost of it down a bit. anyway just some thoghts.

You can also find silicone baking molds at DollarTree for 99 cents I picked one up to try it and it works fine.
