It's opaque enough that you shouldn't need to paint tubes if you use black or
silver. You might want to paint brass tubes, but I haven't done that yet so I
can't say for certain. The blacks, grays and reds are all a combination of opaque
and translucent dyes, but there should be enough opaques to work. I'll test them
and let you know. I just got a kick out of the way it came out, so I came here
to play Show & Tell.

that block looks perfect.....how many....6 blanks per block?

Yeah.. and then a little leftover on the edge to make dangly earrings or
fobs for a keychain.. It depends on how closely I pay attention to my own
notes and math. I poured another one that was 1/4" too thick by not
paying attention so now I have some oversized blanks.. I should stop and
do one thing at a time..

That's very cool...almost looks like rosewood! If you don't mind sharing, what kind of dyes are you using to do this? Transtint? Mixol? Alumilite? Artstuf? Just curious.

I ordered some opaque and translucent dyes with my last order of
Silmar 41. I used both reds and the black. I poured off a little of the
mixed black and added more black to it, so as to have different levels
of opacity.. same reason for using both reds. It gives a 'wispy' or smoky
look to the blank.

Charlie when are you going to start selling your molds?

Jack

I've been waiting for masters.. tried duplicating them myself using various
methods, but each had problems.
I was informed this afternoon that some of the masters are in the mail, so
probably start making them in two or three days.
First up is the cigar pens..

Ah.. I put three blocks (18 blanks) in the classifieds this afternoon. Most are
gone, but there's 3 or 4 left. They're $3.50 or 3 for $10.

FWIW, I plan on making more. People seem to like them.
