A long time ago I had a little book from Hallmark called "Eat Dessert first". It was a book of advice compiled from people of all ages and walks of life. Things a person should experience at least once in their lifetime. It was a fun little book and it actually came in handy for me on numerous occasions.

I thought it might be fun to compile something similar for us penmakers. Things we should all do at least once in our Penmaking "life". I will go first.

TRY AN EXOTIC!

As a person that casts my own PR blanks, It is hard for me to spend money on blanks, Or it was I should say. Ordering some fancy material from Exoticblanks is an exhilirating experience that every penmaker should have at least once. They sell ALOT more than just PR blanks. And to be straight up honest about it, the YIPPEES are really what you are after anyway!

So do yourself a favor... Save up $10 a week for a month or two, and then put you an order together and sit by the mailbox impatiently waiting! I GUARANTEE it will be a fun experience for you!

P.S. THIS IS NOT AN ADVERTISEMENT... I am not saying this to build up the business for Exoticblanks. I am sure they don't need me as a cheerleader. I just think every penmaker should experience ordering from them once. That is the only way to get the YIPPEE's.

Take the time to learn to use a skew. Take time that you set aside just for that purpose with material you have no intended use for. just take the time to experience the skew and not have to worry about messing anything up. When you are done, thank yourself. You are the one that did it.

Try turning between centers... I did that just recently after getting my Christmas parcel from Santa (aka:johnnycnc). One more thing; turn some inlace acrylester blanks - amazing stuff.

splurg on one of those once in a lifetime blanks......

Even if you never get courageous enough to spin it, you won't regret not having it later. (And you can always resell it)

Go to an IAP chapter meeting. The people you meet act like they know you. And they are GREAT folks!!!

PLUS, you know a little about the "topic du jour"!

Don't let your grand daughters see your last shipment from Exotics. Unless you want to be placing another order.
(Hide the pen kits too)

Keep your first pen. After you are done showing it to everyone put it in a box and store it away for at least one year. Then, after you have gained much more experience, open the box. Don't get me wrong, it was "Great" when you made it, but you will not be able to believe how much, greater your creations have become!

And be sure to watch Boondock Saints

YES! Watch Boondock Saints!!!

I suggest you watch it on a computer, with headphones. So you can get the full impact of what is going on! One of the most powerful movies I have ever watched. In fact, you shuld watch it a couple of times!

I was waiting for someone to notice!!

Teach your kid or kids how to turn. Its loads of fun. Down side you lose your lathe and your shop to the kids. Your wife will give you an open account to order more to keep the kids happy. Its a win win either way.

I can't wait for the new one,

I'm a fan too!
Maine comedian Bob Marley has a part in that as well as the new one,...All Saints Day... haven't seen that one yet myself. :)

Teach a young person to turn .. anything. Just let them have fun! I attended our local turning group ... a pretty large group ... around 50 people in attendance. I'm in my 50's and I was one of the youngest ones there. With so many schools doing away with Industrial Arts programs (that's how I got one of my lathes) where are kids going to get to learn and appreciate these skills?
My son's 25, and it was only in the past year that I introduced him to turning. Wish I had let him try it earlier like my father did for me.:frown:
But now we look forward to our next session whenever he gets home for a visit!:)
