The mechanisms on the last two Sierra pens that I assembled were extremely stiff. And when I retracted the ink insert, the top separated from tip unit and the screw on part of the tip unit remained in the top. Any suggestions about what I am doing wrong or a fix? I have been using Sierra mechanisms for a long time and never had this problem before.

Whenever I make a pen kit I always check the tranny before I assemble. Many times these kits sit on the shelf for very long times in inventory and the grease that is in them gets hard so many times a few turns before assembly will loosen it up. If it does not then I do not use. All vendors or most of them have replacements so may want to buy a few extras to have on hand. Next make sure you installed the spring the correct way on the refill. Smaller end to top. Finally I found on all sierra kits no matter who makes them and this includes those diamond knurl kits the metal on metal threads will work loose. I like to use a pair of pliers to tighten. If I sell or give one of these pens away I always make sure to show the customer the way I take apart to change refill and suggest they do the same. As far as the top and staying in the cap is a problem for many years and thus the plier method I use. What happens people tend to twist the cap too hard and it unscrews that tranny. Over time it keeps creeping up and then finally breaks free of the threads. Some people started using blue or purple Loctite on the threads. That is about all I can say maybe others will have suggestions. Good luck.

Thanks for your thoughtful reply
I, too, alway check the tranny before assembly. It's fine before, but not after assembly. I also tighten the metal threads with pliers. It's after the top goes on that it becomes stiff.

Did the tube go in straight when you did the cap. If the tube is angled it could be putting pressure on the tranny. Do you have another Sierra that you can try the cap exchange with?

If it works fine without the turned top piece, your problem is in the connection between the top and the nib section (with transmission)
More than likely there is adhesive in the end of your brass tube, rubbing on the nib section. Adhesive is generally clear when dry, so you won't see it unless you "rough it up" with a file or pen knife.
