By the mid 1700s this wood was becoming scarce. By the late 1800s the species had been logged into genetic impoverishment and commercial extinction. The destruction was finished by a moth and a beetle. By the turn of the 19th century the tree was little more than a shrub in its natural range.
Hint: This tree thrives on an island.
