My oldest son chose a trip to Japan as his graduation gift. So, we are going to visit Kyoto and Tokyo and I was wondering if anyone has suggestions for tool shopping or just gawking. I'm thinking along the lines of the famous chisel and plane blade making techniques, not big factories.
Thoughts or leads?

Thanks,
Dale

Try to contact Lee. He hasn't been here for a while, but he lives in Japan and he is very helpful and knowledge. leehljp

Can't answer the question but I got to spend two week touring Japan a few years ago. You son made a wise choice. A great country. I'd highly recommend a trip to Hiroshima. Very educational and a beautiful city. Give you an eerie feeling to stand below where the bomb went off, along with a "hopeful" (probably not the word I'm looking for) feeling when you look at the beautiful city that arose from the devastation.

I could live in Japan. I love the country and people.

Japan ... One of the things I always want to do before I bite the dust. Kinda interesting to wonder about "Just where DID all that radiation go after only 65 years!" Don't you all remember the warnings we all heard about that was/is supposed to come from nuclear fallout?

Back to your question, DEFINITELY contact Lee as he has been in Japan for quite some time now and would be one of the fellow IAP members to look up. There is another IAP member who also lives in Japan, but I can't think of his name right off hand.

Hope you all have a wonderful trip.

Yes, I am indeed here in Japan. Dale, when are you coming?
Hank Lee is just down the coast from me near Nagoya or at least I think he's still in Japan. I haven't talked to him in quite a few months. I would be glad to help you in any way I can.

You can get chisels and block planes just about anywhere. I'm not sure about any specific specialty stores but I can ask around for you. My local big hardware stores have a vast selection of pretty much anything I need. If you are in Tokyo then head to the Ikebukuro Tokyu Hands craft store. Tokyu Hands is great ....has a lot of unique goods....but quite expensive. For gawking at some of the finest and rarest woods from around the world Shin Kiba part of Tokyo is the place to go......crazy expensive but AMAZING!

Please feel free to PM me.

Cheers,

Chris

I would second what Paul said. I have been to Japan about 8 times over the last few years spending most og the time around Toyota City but have visited Hiroshima and it was by far the best place I have every visited and it is very humbling to stand at what is left of the bomb site. My other favorite city is Kyoto.
