Hello, my 88 chevy pick up manual transmission will not shift into first gear, but all other gears just fine.I had to take off in second to get home this afternoon??I searched the internet and found someone with the same thing happening,Someone replied that it was a synchro?I see Synchro rings kits that are not that expensive,my question is this has anyone changed these or had it done.I wonder how hard it is or how much it would cost to have it done.Maybe someone else has another idea what is causing this to happen.Any information would be great thanks for the help in advance,Victor

Hey Victor,

You will get off a lot cheaper buying a used replacement transmission. The trans will have to be removed either way, and disassembling even a manual transmission is not an easy task - and getting it back together is even more daunting.

The synchronizers themselves may be relatively inexpensive, but having a transmission tech disassemble and replace them will not be.

Synchros just wear out over time, especially if they are made to work hard (rev-matching makes things easier on them). It is not uncommon for them go out, and it does sound like a possible synchro issue to me. You should be able to put the car into gear while the engine not running, though, I believe....

I would check the linkage first before doing anything else. If that is fine, then I would suspect that the shifter arm inside the tranny is bent. It may be cheaper to go and find a used tranny and just replace it, you may as well throw a new clutch in while you're at it.

For clarification, if it won't go into (1st) gear with the car and clutch pedal depressed, it is NOT the synchros. Something else is screwy, and like Neil said, it could be the linkage.

The only linkages I've seen have been external, but I am used to crazy German cars =)
