if you're experimenting you could try using black mica powder that has no pearl and use a much smaller amount that you usually would. It would tint the resin and hopefully keep it transparant. If this is for a pen tube keep in mind how thin the material will end up being. Also, have you tried using the alumilite dye in the PR...less than a drop might work for standard pen blanks

....Might have to start experimenting with other things..

Ohhh cool!!! Can I help?? Huhuhuhuh?

Hobby lobby has a casting craft black resin dye that I had to put a butt load of to get a deep black. When I first mixed it in it was a smokey grey that I needed darker because you could still see thru it.

I have used Minwax Ebony Stain in resin before, if you oversaturate it though it makes resin so that it will never dry and cure right. I have gotten results that are almost jet black opaque to a REALLY dark smokey Greyish/Black and clear it can even work as a light tint on the resin. You will have to experiment to see what color/mixture you like the best. I have used the minwax stains before as a cheap way to stain the resin different colors. Sorry I don't have pics. good luck with your endeavor

way back when, I worked a summer in a screen printing factory. We printed large bolts of cloth for things like couches and clothing runs.

One of the things you learned very quickly was that the smallest amount of black has a large effect on colors. more than a couple drops could turn a 50 gallon barrel of color grey, a few more and the barrel would be black. consider that 99.9999 percent of the barrel was a transparent media.

All that being said, don't be surprised to find out that most other black colorants are the same way. And besides, that chair looks grey to me, black is supposed to be opaque.

I would try about 2 drops of black enamel paint in 8 oz of resin. You might want to try 1 drop and stir it in first to see if that is enough.

Charlie, have you tried something like Aniline die? I use it in wood working all the time. it comes in both alcohol base and water base. comes to you in powdered form and is realllllllly powerful. with three basic colors you can mix any color. from the dies I have mixed its pretty darn transparent in its liquid form. I buy mine commercially, but i see the local Woodcraft store has it too.

Does anyone know of a good, translucent black dye for resin? I'm trying to
get a deep, dark dye without it going opaque. Something similar to the way
the Alumilite or Smooth-On dyes work .. you can get a really dark color, yet
still read print through it The reds and purples are a good example. It will
get dark, but still crystal clear.(with enough light) All of the black dyes I've
tried go opaque fairly quickly.

Anyone found a source? OR has anyone found a need for it? Maybe mot..

Ooohh... I'd forgotten about that.

Just be sure to get the alcohol based, NOT the water based.

You know why... hehe

I would buy the powder and mix it myself to make sure there aren't any surprises.
