Well, at first I was thinking you could simply call it the "top part" since it is "on top" (ie, like your head is on top of your shoulders).... but then again, EVERY PART of the "top" is a "top part".

Now, if I haven't thoroughly confused and disgruntled you, I would simply refer to it as the stem if you are talking to a kid..... or if you are talking to a really artsy-fartsy woodturner, you could call it the "finial"... or if you are talking to a kid, you could call it the "stick".

In other words, I don't really know.[B)]

We used to play with those similar to this:
http://www.sandstrum.com/TOP9.JPG only the were wood and metal.
As kids, we played a game called crack-top where you threw your top onto someone's spinning top and if you knocked it out of the cirlce drawn on the cement, it became yours. We sharpened the point for more control. So, I'd call it the point.

According to the International Top Spinners Association: ( http://www.byron.com/itsa/ )

" The top spins on the point or tip. This is the smallest part of the spinning top. The other end of the spinning top is the crown. It’s the starting place where we wind the spinning top. Right below the crown is the shoulder. The body of the spinning top is the part between the shoulder and the tip. "

thanks at all! i meant not the tops you have shown, i meant the stem of the finger tops like these:
