Hi Folks,
It's been a week or so since I checked in. The wife and I just got back from Oregon. We went up to Portland to visit Friends and family. We had a wonderful time and visited folks we haven't seen in some time.
Anyway, we checked in with the WW stores while we were there. Rockler and Woodcraft were the main two I was able to visit. The Rockler in Beaverton was pretty disappointing, messy store, limited selection, small store. The people were nice and tried to be helpfull.
Then we went to the Woodcraft store in Tigard. What a difference, clean, well organized, well stocked, large and airy, I just really liked this store. I especially liked the fact that they had the new Jet mini (JML-1014 VSI). They had $299 on it too. SOLD!!!!!! I had him open the box and I took a quick look at it, alls good. Grabbed a cheap mandrel and a blank and walked out for $317 and change. Gotta love it.
I have turned a couple of blanks with it so far. 'I LOVE IT'. Accurate out of the box. Smooth, quiet and the variable speed is awesome. I have been using a Jet "pen lathe" for the last year. This lathe has showed me just how under powered the pen lathe is.
Any one shopping for a lathe, look at the Jet mini. You wont be disappointed. I can only imagine using a full size Jet.
Over all, a killer trip. I AM HAPPY!

I'd go on alot more vacations if I could come home with tools like that[;)] Normally I hate vacations, spend all that time and money and you don't have anything to show for it. I should have used your technique years ago. I bet the wife wouldn't be after me to go on more vactions. Great machine, have fun.

Good choice and congrats!!!

Jet mini VS is a wonderful machine...I wonder why others gamble with other brand as much as I see too many horror stories with other brands.[?] I guess we have to thank them...keeps Jet competing [:D]

Bullhead City in not all that far from Somerton Az. Steve still works I am retired, lock your shop.[:D] Reed

Very Nice Lathe Congrads.

Hey Richard, it is a trade off, I get a lathe for $300 and she will get a thousand bucks worth of furniture. And it was still worth it.
My shop gets dirtied James, then it gets cleaned shortly after.[:D][:D][:D] Of course thats just me.
I don't worry about the shop, I have a large Boxer and an alarm system.

Congrats Steve, I am sooooooo jealous. My next lathe will also be the Jet Mini but for now I will use what I have. Hmmmmmm......if I ever sell that really expensive pen I'll make one day[8D]

Glad you had fun, glad your back!

Thanks Becca,
Actually, I hadn't intended to buy a lathe in Oregon. But when they had the mini for the 299 price, I decide to go for it. Now I have to make a spot for it in the shop. I think I can handle that.[}:)][}:)]
And thanks, It's good to be back. We almost got stuck up north. That big storm came through just as we were heading down. The main pass on I-5 was restricted to chains only so we had to take the coastal route. It added over 4 hours to our drive and we still ran into snow. I'm just glad to be home and safe.

<br />Absolutely John. Some say VS isn't necessary, but I feel for a less experienced turner like myself (less than 2 years) it is quite helpful.

Most professional turners I know use VS. Nuff said. [;)]

Thank you Dario.
I remember a while back, someone had made the comment that VS can be seen as unnecessary if you are skilled enough. And I am not skilled enough. I found it especially helpful when I turned my first PR casting. And it is helpful when I sand.
