OK, here is the Jet Mini I won on ebay for $100.00. This is what I have into the lathe so you make the call, Gloat or not. Got up early Saturday and was on the road by 4:30 am for what turned out to be a 737 mile round trip drive to pick the lathe up. Simi Valley CA to Sacramento & back. I was a little uneasy about the transaction but asked to pay in cash so I felt a little better. I arrived about 10:00 and I was surprised the deal was for real. I paid my $100.00 and was on my way. I got back home around 4:00 pm so it was a 11.5 hour road trip. I got the lathe home and as stated on the bid it was not running. I posted a few questions here and followed some great advise and got the lathe running. When I put everything back together the only thing that was missing was the drive center. Small faceplate, a bunch of "Shop Smith" and 1 "Craftsman" tools that will make good grinding experiments or skews turned into negative scrapers, Jet mini with extension and stand. I posted a few pictures so you could see what I got.

I really enjoyed the sunset this evening so I thought I would share

Final Tally
$100.00 Jet Mini lathe
$65.00 for Gas (Ford Escort, daily commuter 35 miles to the gallon)
$6.89 For an Awesome Jack In The Box Lunch
Total $171.89 Plus
11.5 hours in the car (I did not mind the drive and wondered what they do with all of those trees that have fallen over in the Orchards or the heavy pruning of the limbs).

Always looking for that next big score

I would say Totally worth it. good thing I didn't see it. I may have upped the bid to obtain the extension. Next time you run to Sacramento though let me know. I could have hooked you up with some of that wood from the Orchards...
GREAT FIND.

What are the Orchards from the Bakersfield area North to Stockton along the 5? My guess was some type of Nutwood's, Pit Fruit and some Citrus. I did see one guy along the trip home that into one of those big piles of trees that were pushed over for grading, he had a chain saw and a trailer about half filled of crotch wood and such. But it was hard to tell @ 80 mph. I should have stopped and asked a few questions but I was on a mission.

Sounds like a great deal to me.
I have the Jet lathe stand (but have a Delta Midi on it), and I found that with the legs splayed out instead of in, they are not in the way of my feet as much when I'm working near the headstock.

Great find!
Eric

mostly almonds, some walnut. closer to Bakersfield would be orange.
lots of almond orchards around Stockton

That is a great find, but like you, I thought the legs should be the other way round.

there used to be the Diamond Nut Company around there, they had large orchards of Almonds and Pistachio trees.

I have a Jet Mini VS that have the legs turned the other way. I just wanted to see if they were in the way turned in or not. Just playing around. One of the Mini's set up that way at the local Woodcraft and wanted to give it a try. The one thing that I do like about the Non VS model is at the lower speeds is has full power. On my VS model when you have it on the Medium speed range and you are working on the slowest speed it kind of bogs down. With the one pictured in this post when on the slow speeds it grinds right along. It makes sense to me after thinking about it, the motor is running at full speed on the non VS whatever the pulley setting is while the VS motor is running at the slower speeds to achieve the lower end of the Variable setting.

How does the Almond & Pistachio turn? We have citrus around here and find that fun to turn.

Thanks for all of the replys
