I went to Harbor Freight to get a photo station thingy. The Harbor Freight I have been going to for about a year. As I was getting into my truck, I notice the store right next store to it, read the name and it said "Rockler Woodworking and Hardware" I thought cool, I will go in and look at some bandsaws. Little did I know that they have two isles of pen kits, blanks, displays, scoops, shakers, grinders, candleholders, bowls, you name it, they had it. Not to mention all the other cool stuff they have there. I dont have enough money for a store this close to my house.

Great for instant gratification but prices are much higher than buying online.
Check out there classes on the weekends. Sometimes they have the local chapters over. Sign up for their flyers they hide a few really good deals in there on occasion but plan to be the first one in the store they go fast

Yea, Rockler was the only place I knew about when I decided to turn pens. I got my lathe and a bunch of tools and a lot of pen kits, etc. from them. But I also think their prices are high. If you can overcome the "i want it now" (which I can't do often enough) buying from the guys on the forums here is the way to go. I've bought a good bit of stuff now and it has always been a satisfying and pleasant experience.

I was surprised that some of the stuff was pretty good, but some of the kit prices seemed double. I am still realling from the prices of the Festool stuff, those prices are out of control, I am sure they are good, but I will never own one, lol. I buy most of my stuff online as well, I just cant see paying $4 dollars for a slimline. It is a cool store to go in and browse for a while and walk out with a kit or two. I saw a magnetic picker upper thing there, I had not seen one of those before, I carried it around for a while, but put it down.

Yep I am glad my nearest store is over an hour away, keeps me from buying to much. Now if the wife would hide my credit card and Paypal password then I would be all right.

I support our Woodcraft which is 20 miles away and the suppliers here as well. I try to support our Woodcraft because it is there for things I need now and I have someone to talk to. The owners are the best.

Woodcraft is 2 miles from my house and Harbor Freight is 3 miles away. I have no chance, I am always broke.

It stinks when you have to start adding some discipline to your hobby doesn't it? A Woodcraft moved into town a couple of years ago, but it is way on the other side of town and I am seldom over there. I drop in just about every time I do need to go to that side of town though. it is nice to have around in case I need something right now. I also know that my hopes don't do much to help them stay in business.

I have a Rockler that is about half way between work and home taking a slightly longer way home. I would drop in and look around alot or pick up odd tools when they were having a sale/deal.

They were having a quick pen making demo one weekend. Figured I would make the trip and see it done. That was 15 months ago. It's been all down hill since. A bunch of new tools, about 100 pens and back in debt.

Nearest Woodcraft to me is about 50 miles away and nearest 2 Harbor Freights are 50-55 miles away in opposite directions.. fortunately, there is a great Chinese restaurant near the Woodcraft and I can talk the wife into Chinese food about once a month:laugh: even more fortunate, I don't have to talk very hard :laugh:. Also when the step son hits town, (he's a truck driver and only gets home about once a month) he's a fan of the restaurant and will offer to buy lunch if we meet him there.:laugh::laugh:

I still tend to buy more on line than at the stores... WC seems high and don't need much from HF very often.

John,
I understand. It's gonna be ok, really. Harbor Freight is literally 1 minute from my house. I was stoked when Woodcraft came to town. It's just down the street really about 5 miles. I was at work and a Rockler sign jumped out at me. Holy crap we have hit the big time. It's 10 minutes form where I work. All I have to say is that the newness does where off, and when the rational mind does kick in, it doesn't seem to be such a big deal.

By that reasoning:eek: I should be as happy a pig in S&%t. The nearest whatever store is a good 5000 km from here.

Chris, maybe Woodcraft will give you an exclusive territory and a really good deal if you offer to 'open' one in your area. Be ready to shell out $100,000 USD or more if you do make the offer.
