Arrangement and spelling are two different things.

For example, anyone can read this: Sutipd.

But this is more of a challenge: Sotpoid.

Capiche?

It don't matter if the first and last letters are in the right place when the stuff in the middle actually contains the wrong letters.

So, there's no getting out of it, Ed, spelling accounts for half of your grade. A well-groomed mustache makes up the other half. See you again next quarter. [}:)][:p]:D

I hope the spammers don't get this. Too good a hint.

Oh, wait, they already know it and use it. You can even replace letters with numbers and symbols and the human mind will figure it out nearly as fast as reading "properly spelled" english.

There are some places that a hieroglyphic language would be useful. Thwarting spam would be one of them. They can't very well change the kanji character and still have it mean the same thing.

Karl, I disagree! In school a long time ago, if you reversed the "i" and the "e" it was counted as a mis-spelled word, not out of place letters. Re-arranging letters is still spelling errors. Bielive me, I am corrcet. [}:)];):D

We have a tendency these days to regard poor spelling as "dyslexia" in much the same way that we excuse badly behaved children as "hyperactive". I've been teaching for 41 years and, though a poor speller, was forced to take more care and to put some thought into what I wrote. My approach has always been to prevent problems occurring in the first instance. This I have done via guidance and encouragement, not through the sarcasm and belittling remarks that marked my schooldays.
In many ways ranting about poor spelling and grammatical usage is like emptying the ocean with a spoon. They are normally symptomatic of a person's background and shouldn't in any way diminish their worth as a person.
For those of us who are fortunate enough to be literate, to whatever degree, I would be more worried about poor handwriting. Ed's little piece is both amusing and instructive. I wonder how well we woukd have done though if this had been posted in some of the shocking handwriting I'm sure we have all dealt with?
As A university profeesor out here said many years ago "I have never been defeated by poor spelling, only poor handwriting."

My old timey friend's mother went blind in her 40's. She had been a secretary at Boeing since she was 19... So we took it for granted that when she sent letters out that she still typed them on a standard typewriter. Ocassionally she got her hand placement wrong. Those letters weren't misspelled, they were in code.:)

I find it interesting that if we agree with someone we consider their words instructive. If, however we disagree, we consider them to be ranting.

My late mother suffered from arthritis and Parkinson's disease. Her letters were composed with perfect grammar and spelling but required a bit of work to decipher due to the deterioration of her penmanship.

For what it is worth, it is my spoon and I will dip it in whatever ocean I choose. :D

An interesting side note:
When I was a child, computers had not happened yet. SECRETARIES were hired to type for executives, and I was destined to be an executive. HOWEVER, my mother "strongly encouraged" me to learn to touch-type one Summer. When mother "strongly encouraged", it was best to obey.

NOW, with computers an everyday part of my life and secretaries NO part of my life, I am very fortunate to be able to make copious quantities of entries on a forum enlightening all my pen-turning friends. Just think, if I could NOT type, YOU would be far less enlightened. (Bet you never considered this before!!!)[)][)][)][)][)][)][)]
