I have a jar with blue TransTint from Woodcraft. Considering maple or poplar. Other woods I should consider? What should I do: turn then tint but not drill? CA for a finish after the wood has dried or another finish? Thanks.

I've had success with dye by gluing the tube in, turning, and dying just before applying my CA regimen. I can't remember what dye I used, but I think it might have been an alcohol ink. The wood was birdseye maple. I've attached pictures of a couple of them below. I am very curious to see what process you wind up using and how yours turn out. - Dave

I had tinted on a long time ago and it came out like yours. Mine is water based but an alcohol base would dry faster. Have lots of DNA.

I buy the Artisan alcohol based dyes from Craft Supplies.

I apply just as Dave describe. Turn the pen down to size, sand to 400, then apply the dye. I allow a few hours to dry then apply a CA finish. Never an issue.

They always look great with figured maple.

DC, what dye did you use? Eye-catching pen. BTW, I like curly maple's grain and pattern, no matter what color. Thanks for sharing the photo.

I added some Ranger alcohol ink to a little denatured alcohol then applied it with a QTip to the shaped and sanded blank. It usually takes 2 coats. CA finish after it dries. Purple and gold on this one because it was for an LSU fan.
