I just got a 4' x 6" x 3/4" piece of Tiger wood from a flooring company. I promised to bring back a pen to say thanks. (They also gave me Purple heart, Ipe, Brazilian cherry and Caribbean pine!)

Question: Does this wood turn well angle-cut or cross-cut?

It is a beautiful brownish-orange plank with brown stripes running through the length of the piece. Can't wait to start turning it.

Chris, first let me say... you suck! JK... I'm actually quite jealous. I love Goncalo Alves! It's one of my favorite turning woods. It turns like a dream, it's dense and close grained, and it polishes up quite nicely on it's own. Since it's curly, I would not x-cut it. You'll loose too much of the dramatic effect that curl can give you. I'd either do as Dario said and straight cut it, or I might bias (angle) cut it.

Thanks, Dario. Billy, I WAS going to share a little - to make up for my driving on Saturday.

I forgot, I got another plank of the same dimensions - Australian cypress - almost entirely one big knot - not fit for flooring (darn).

Actually, I deserved Billy's mild, joking rebuke. My wife and daughters have told me repeatedly, "Don't gloat, or you won't have friends." Sage advice.

Yup, you're losing friends by the minute Chris. I'll tell you what - I don't have many anyway, so just send the pieces to me! [:D]
