Thread on Bottle Stoppers

Hi,

I get bottle stoppers from PSI and see that they now have threaded inserts to use instead of having to thread the hole in the blank itself.

I normally would thread the whole, but sometimes on spalted pieces the threads wear out on the bottle stopper chuck; so I figure that the inserts would be useful.

However, they are priced at $8 for a 4-pack! A bit high in my book. I have found a source for threaded inserts but need help identifying the thread on the coarse side of the bottle stopper.

Instead of buying those "threads" I take the blank, drill a 3/4" hole (both diameter and depth), epoxy in a 3/4" block of 'cross-grain' hickory, then drill and tap as I normally do. Cost - next to nothing and it will hold VERY strongly because cross-grain is much more stable than end-grain.

You can also get the inserts in larger quantities and cheaper at MSC. Here is 10 ea for $9.04
