That guy better buy his Fruity Pebbles at Costco! I saw that in a woodworking magazine a while ago and wish I could remember how the guy chucked it, or for that matter how he turned it. I don't recall if he had a tool rest or did it freehand, but one thing he better have had is a good life insurance policy...

Yea, it's one thing to turn it... now lets see him do a CA finish on it. Ya gotta admire a guy who would even THINK of something like that, much less actually pull it off. You almost have to wonder if there wasn't some Schnapps involved at the moment of the initial idea. (also a wife someplace going "Now what's he doing?").

Now we need somebody to make a pen out of a telephone pole, or else we are just lagging behind. :smile-big:

So who does he call if he gets a blow out .....AAA?

Nah! He'll need John Deere or Case or maybe Catepillar.

Visexp, Thanks for the link... that was really interesting to walk through his steps... I ran it through Babelfish so I had an idea of what the captions said. My lathes is supposed to be able to do 29" outboard, but not sure I'll even attempt something that size, and for sure nothing thats 8' across.

One of the world's largest bowls was turned by a family (the Edwards family I believe) owned business located in Barnesville, GA. The bowl was turned several years ago and the business is no longer in business. From what I can remember of the pictures I saw of the bowl it was s bit smaller than the one in this thread. It was turned on a large out board chuck using an actual lathe the famillies father had built. It held the Guiness world record for a long time.

I think I could do it, if I had the time and a bigger lathe. It should be retractable, maybe a click pen, so it would need a really long drill bit. I've got a pole that the utility company left behind when they widened our street to 4 lanes. Ideas have already started to form in head so it's going to torment me forever now.

Couple of interesting shots. This one is from the end.
