Has anyone tried using this stuff to make a mood ring pen? My daughter asked me if I could make her a mood ring pen. If they can cast it into rings we must be able to make Mood Pens.

Sorta..... I'm still working on a "mood" pen. So far the best results have come from using the liquid plasma from devices like broken weather stations, plasma alarm clocks.

I'm still working with limited successes. I'll keep you posted as my experiment progresses.

This site sells Thermochromic Powders. I wonder if it can be mixed with polyester resin. I never realized they use this stuff so much. Straws that change color with the temperature of liquid going through them. Baby spoons that change color so you can tell if the food is too hot. Bath tub plugs so you can tell if the water is too hot. I may get some and mix some up.

Fantastic Idea. Something I might be interested in if you work it out.... that way when my staff walk in they could just look at the pen and say .. uh .. nevermind we'll be back when it's BLUE!!!!!!!!!!

ROFL ... I'm serious though .. just in case you might think I'm not

I think it would look good cut like butch does with the MOP sheets

I actually got some of the sheets a while back to try this but they are stiff plastic and don't want to stick to brass tubes very well. I have not totally given up but it wasn't as easy as wrap tube, cast, turn.

I was thinking, cut them in long thin narrow strips and glue them edge to edge length wise around the tube like an octagon or something.

I get it, like those Dichroic Glass blanks Dawn at Exotics makes. I think someone else here made them too.

The powder came on Thursday. I cast a few blanks and the effect survived the casting temps. We (the vendor and I) weren't sure it would. I even did a post-cure.

The resin is more brittle with this powder in it.

I glued some slim tubes and will make a pen tonight.

Just had to post the teaser?

Yup.

I'll do pics of the pen after I make it. Then if it turns out I'm gonna send it to the vendor who sent me the powder sample.

The powder clumped in the first batch. Not noticeable in a 3/4" thick cast, but when turned down into a pen the clarity of the material is compromised by speckles of clumped powder.

The vendor recommended re-grinding it (!) I'll try mixing it longer. Or perhaps mixing it into a small amount of resin, then mixing that seed resin into a larger batch.

Even so, does it actually change colors with temp changes after it was cast?

Yes, it does.

Well, it goes clear, showing whatever is underneath. Reverse painting the holes in the blank is recommended.
