Bowl, goblet, whatever... This bowl actually turned out to be more fiddleback than tiger, but the goblets are tiger all the way. The bowl was turned thin then microwaved to get it to sag. Comments, critiques are welcome. This maple is awesome!!

They warped almost imperceptibly. between the 2k rpm turning, the sanding (to 400), and the burnishing with shavings, the goblet portion is basically dry when I take it off the lathe. I've made other style goblets, and I really like this style better. The thinner wall gives them a much nicer feel.

Beautiful work! Being Easter season, it puts me in mind of the Last Supper - very nice! I haven't done any bowls (taking a class at woodcraft tomorrow for that, actually). Can you tell a little bit about where you say "The bowl was turned thin then microwaved to get it to sag." Is that strictly for aesthetic purposes? Or does that help "stabilize" the bowl in some way? Thanks!

It does two things, actually. It dries the wood quickly so it will sand well and accept a finish. It also causes the wood to sag, and take an odd shape, if you turn the wood thin enough. If you leave it thicker, it will dry, warping a little, but still leaving you enough material to true up the shape. This is useful if you want to rough turn a bowl and finish it quickly.
