Prepare yourself for a sight tonight — not to mention some wild behavior, if the legends are true. The biggest full moon in 15 years is set to grace the Northern Hemisphere tonight.

Because the moon orbits along an egg-shaped ellipse, not a circle, its distance from us changes. Today, the moon is approaching its nearest point to Earth, so it should look about 14 percent bigger and 30 percent brighter than this year's other full moons, according to NASA.

Since the moon takes about 28 days to orbit Earth, it reaches its point of closest approach, called perigee, about once a month. But since the moon's orbit isn't a perfect oval — rather, it wobbles — some perigees are closer than others. Tomorrow's approach will be the closest the moon has come to Earth since 1993.

On top of that, tonight's moon will become full just four hours after perigee. The next time these two events will coincide will be in 2016.

The full moon isn't the only boost we get from this special alignment: Tides should be especially big, too. Lunar gravity at perigee pulls tide waters about an inch higher than usual.

Under water here :frown: (wish we had a frogman smily) it has been raining for what seems like weeks here . I'm just above sea level here the higher tides combined with all the rain my neighborhood will almost be an island tonight .

Uh... Lou, what planet are you on? :) . The full moon for June was on the 7th and the next full moon will be the 7th of July. We currently have a new moon with 1% illumination.
The link you have is for Dec. 9, 2008.....

That explains why I was cut off in traffic 3 times today, the check out at the grocery packed my bread in the bottom of the bag and threw 4 cans on top of it, my neighbor mowed his yard today in his PJ's...damn that full moon.,now I'll have to wear my foil hat to ward off the crazies it brings out.

Does that mean I can take my foil hat off?

Well.... I might leave it on... even though the moon is not full tonight and not occurring near perigee, there is still a slight possibility that aliens are out there watching.. and waiting... just for you to remove the foil hat. Better safe that sorry... (my dad always told me). Cheers...

Yep, I remember when that moon did happen though. The moon is leaving us too. I don't recall how much, it's like every day the moon is 1/2" or a full inch further away. When the Dinasours roamed the planet the moon would have looked 2-3 times bigger than it does now. Eventually it will leave our orbit, but that's probably billions of years from now.

All this talk of rain..man it's soggy here too. Way too much rain this year.

I'll keep looking up and if I see the moon leave, I'll let you know.

Well Lou, I will buy your Big Full Moon story, But it is still not an excuse for your behavior.

And remember. Just because I am paranoid does not mean they are not out to get me.

On the subject of rain, We may actually have the most rain for a June since they started recording such things. The record is 2.2 inches. stranger than that is there are people here that sell boats.

I sat out there all night last night and didn't see a full moon, but I sure did get wet from all the pleasant rain we have been getting. I really like the rain, it keeps things wet.

If 'The lunatic is inside your head' then 'I'll meet you on the dark side of the moon'

Great album, but watching 'Pulse' live was better:cool:

Full moon or not, as soon as he posted this, several long discussions broke out and are still continuing!

Lou, you are a visionary!

The last and only time I watched the Pink Floyd movie. 2 hits of acid, a case of beer and a quarter ounce of black hash. Must have been 20 yrs ago now, and I wrote a babbling idiot's term paper on "what would happen if 2 planets collide", of which even the CIA couldn't decipher. The teacher couldn't find a grade low enough for me. A friend of mine drove home, but on the way his car was attacked by a 4 foot mosquito, so he swerved to avoid it and hit a tree. The cops didn't believe his story, he was admitted to the phsyc ward and received electric shock therapy. Those were some days.

Missed it by 6 months. That's not bad. I missed most of 1967-1970. But more recently

I called up my friend LeRoy on the phone
I said, Buddy, I'm afraid to be alone
'Cause I got some weird ideas in my head
About things to do in Denver when you're dead

Wow thank god I thought I was the only one that saw strange days, big gnats and watched people crawl on my ceiling
