Randy I just read the tread over at Sawmill Creek myself-------this would be a great project to get involed with.
There are several members here that have donated a bunch of pens over the years but this is the first time I have ever seen them ask for something special like this.
I know I can come up with 20 or 30 pens to send them.

Randy I have been sending Freedom Pen Project pens for years. I just sent 28 pens last month. They are the reason I started turning pens---I figured it was something I could do to help out a great cause.
I wish there was a way that we could ship one large lot of pens from all of us here at IAP.
The menbers could fill out a small card that would go with the pen but the credit for the lot would go to IAP.
If we can get some interest in doing this I sure would find the time to make this work and take care of the middle mans job.
If I remember right Jeff is a fan of FPP also.

Gary, if you put something together I will be glad to send some pens. I don't have much in inventory right now and I am in the middle of a major room addition, but I will get a dozen pens together for the FPP.

This is on my woulda shouda coulda list.

Can someone 'splain the parameters?

Any kind of pen? Any colors? Generally Red, white blue corian?

I seriously don't know what is expected, but if there is an effort made, I'm sure I can come up with a dozen or two (more if it's not "between shows".)

Thanks for any input.

Ed-

I've sent several in to the Freedom Pens project: like others in this thread, it's how I really got started making pens (and now I'm hooked with the addiction). They will take any and all handmade pens, and they don't all have to be wood. Use your best casting, wood, etc. I have sent in various types, such as a slimline and cigar.

I've given away pens to just about every family member, and I don't have any interest in trying to sell them due to my own time commitments; however, with this program I get to keep practicing different styles and techniques. I see the Freedom Pens project as one heck of a worthy cause. Go to the Creek's website and you'll see examples of the correspondence from our service men and women expressing their appreciation from someone back home.

How about a challenge for all of the US-based members of this website make at least two pens for this project? I'll signup for it, and it's not that big of a time investment. Of course, if any non-US based member would like to contribute, that would be great, too.

Regards,

Michael

Here's the story----I read this tread this morning

FREEDOM PENS NEEDS YOU.

Normally I would not post here but I know that some of you don't check the Freedom Pens Forum.

We have had a request for 6,000 pens from the Aircraft Carrier Abraham Lincoln. At this point in time, I have no pens left to send as I have just shipped out the last 500 pens I had.

If you have some time on your hands please make some pens for the cause.
Our service men and women need to know how much support they have here at home.

Let's see if we can provide them with that support.

In the last four years we have shipped almost 86,000 pens. Your help will be appreciated more than you know.

Thanks in advance for you help.

Jackie Outten

They need pens----lots of them----clean out your old stock---get rid of your out of date kits---those kits with weak platings----here is a way to put them to good use.
Remember that these are still handmade pens that you crafted.
What kind of pens-----heck any pen that writes will do the trick it makes no difference what the blank is.
I would like to collect as many pens as possible and forward them to The Freedon Pen Project. They would be sent----"From the membership at IAP"

We(my family) have sent over 1000 pens to the troops in the past 2 years alone. Any type of pen works for the project and they can be made of any material. The corian is very popular and the colors are available. If we all want to participate in the FPP, we can do a large group buy and cut the cost down to minimal. There are several places that will give a good deal for this project. I normally make the pens out of chrome since it is the most durable inexpensive finish around. My brother left a Rikon mini-lathe and tools in Iraq for his unit to work with and we still send them kits that are tubed and milled. It is a nice diversion from the surrounding world.

I would turn a dozen or two to send to our troops. I even have a few 1/2" Red White, Aand Blue corian that would make great slimlines.

It looks like this is a go, so..... I have some red and blue corian here if anyone wants some. This is not for sale, it is just for this project. If you would like some, please contact me and I will send you some. I am out of white for now, if I have enough requests for the corian, I will take a ride over and get more including the white.

Freedom Pen Turnathon in Dallas this weekend

For anybody in the Dallas area that would like to contribute, there will be a Freedom Pen Turnathon this Saturday at Wood World, 13650 TI Blvd #101, Dallas, TX 75243. Wood World will provide blanks and slim line kits. You should bring your turning tools, and a lathe if you can. Also you can bring pre-glued and trimmed blanks, if the tubes are not for the slim line you will need to bring the kit as well.

I would also turn some pens for an IAP group contribution if one is organized. If we want to use some special material, or colors, a group buy would help to reduce the cost.

Thanks
Mike

I'm in too.

I orginally came here to look for some info on the Freedom Pens Turnathon in Dallas this weekend, and saw this post. I will figure out what I can do, and let you know. Just let me know a date.
If anybody is going to be at the turnathon, I'll see you there.

Bottom line is to get the pens moving ---I would like to send them in as a group --from the Menbership of IAP--- but any type of turnathon would help also.
I will be happy to forward the pens
PM me for my address.
Pens need to be wrapped or placed in tubes.
If you can take the time to make a small card include --type of wood---IAP---Your name if you want----I just keep it simple.
I am going to try and get some extra tubes ordered later today---so you could just wrap them in paper.

What is the target date I have 12 or so done not in patriotic colors but I am off to Hawaii for 10 days on Friday and if this is going to be over by then I need to just ship what I have. Someone PM me with an address if this is going to end before the weekend of the 9th Aug. If not I would like to see if we could get a turnathon somewhere in Houston for that weekend. We have several IAP members in the greater Houston area.

I just sent a PM to the folks over at FPP and asked about a time line on this project.
I know they are completely out of pens-----I also know that getting 6 thousand pens together is going to take some time.
What I am hoping for is to get some pens shipped ASAP and a larger amount will follow them.

Quick story if you don't mind. My wife and I were at a little craft show in the New Mexico mountains last week and a young lady stopped by to see our pens and she said she already had a pen that was given to her by the Freedom Pen project while she was stationed in Iraq and she was so appreciative. The last thing she said to us was "freedom is not free."

Well, I am off to the Dr.s tomorrow to see if I can get this dang cast off. If so, I can try to turn a few pens for this very worthwhile cause. I will send what I can do in the next 10 days to you Gary, to include with the rest, if that is OK.

Thanks Rob----I was thinking about you today when I fell over that Pecan blank.
Guess I need to toss that up on the lathe and take her for a spin

Becca----PM is on the way-----Thanks
Folks they can use every pen they can find right now so even if you just have a couple of them ---they sure would help.

I am currently out of town working, but will be home in a few weeks and would like to send some pens if it is not to late. Need a address to send to. Thanks.

I am not much for any war, but absolutely support our men and women fighting. I am in for some pens. Just put out details of where to ship them and I will sent them. If we do a group buy for kits then I am in for that also. It is also how I got into pen turning last October through my local Woodcraft.

Hey Gary,

I have some I can send you - and tubes as well. Also, if someone wants some pre-drilled blanks - Cigar, Sierra or Atlas kit size, I have a bunch sitting around here.
PM me with address to send pens.

Shipping info on the way.----------I really want to thank everyone for helping out with this.
Just think of all the folks that will have a smile and a new pen thanks to everyone here at IAP who has helped out.

Is any style acceptable? ie cigars?
Will have a package in the mail soon.

Marcia

Yup ----Marcia we will be more than happy to accept any type of kit.
I have had several folks ask about a time frame for doing this and right now I think that I will try and do this till Sept 1st 2008---this will give the folks some time to gather or turn some pens.
Thanks to everyone for helping out with this Freedom Pen Project

Count me in! Is there anyone in the Nashville area that could drill some blanks for me? That is always my hold up. I've got a couple of fountains--do they work well for this, or is that going to cause leaking/ink supply problems? And I need the address to send them to.
